Galileo probe
    #1917954 - 09/15/03 11:41 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

On 21 September, the Galileo probe will plunge into Jupiter's stormy clouds to be consumed by heat and pressure. It has to be destroyed so that any stowaway microbes on the probe do not contaminate Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, on which there may be life. so.....why cant we send this probe, trash, and nuclear waste to the sun? wouldnt everything eventually evaporate? isnt the sun a giant nuclear ball anyway? what if there is some kind of life on jupiter thiat we will destroy b/c of this? this probe

every now and then, rockets don't work like they're supposed to. think about it...

and sending our regular garbage to the sun would be obscenely expensive.

We had to do a cost analysis of using a railgun to shoot nuclear waste to the sun in a physics class I had. Very expensive.

And our regular garbage is obscenely building up faster than the speed of light (heh), and there is nothing we can really do with it that doesn't harm some aspect of Mother Nature.. eventually, the payoff of doing this would be far greater and more important than how much it costs to do so..
Peace.

Except for all the polution we cause when we create the components needed to build the delivery mechanism. Rather than treat the symptom, we need to fix the problem and stop producing so much waste.

We can seriously reduce how much waste we are producing, but we are always going to be producing waste, waste that the Earth should not have to take.. Birds don't follow their nests, nor should we, and what is available is a highly effective and no harm attached way of cleaning up after ourselves.

And, as space travel becomes more viable every day, this is a definite option.. it won't be highly expensive for ever.
Peace.

If we sent this probe to the sun...how would we learn anything about Jupiter?

Galileo has already completed its mission of studying Jupiter and its moons. It is now out of propellant so it can't be redirected into the sun.

Maybe we should deport George Bush and his Cabinent to the Sun... I mean, they ARE our garbage, aren't they?

Seriously, though, maybe instead of him shredding papers, he can instead send them to the Sun...

All right, I am done. hehe
Peace.

Oh, lol. I haven't followed Galileo too much since it started breaking down on it's way to Jupiter.

Didn't know the mission was finished yet.

Isn't the final plunge of the prope into the atmosphere supposed to be an experiment of its own?

The waste came from the Earth to begin with, so I say we spend money on researching better and more effective ways of neutralizing it, instead of spending that money figuring out how to send it to space.

Thats just like humanity, throw insane amounts of money at problems without attempting to apply the needed energy to fixing the root of the problem.

The root of the problem can't exactly be fixed. We will always produce waste. And, at the moment, we have a lot of nuclear waste. It isn't like we are just throwing it out into space to float and pollute space. It is going to the sun, where it will be burnt up, with no trace, and no harm or damage done..

Of course, the idea of throwing all of our trash at the Spiritual Logos and Life Giver in this solar system seems at least a little bizarre to me..
Peace.

I just have a hunch that it would be much cheaper to develop agents that would neutralize toxic waste, or somehow turn it into something useful.

At any rate, I doubt sending our waste 150,000,000 miles into space would be at the top of the list of efficient and plausible solutions to our waste problems. Even if our space program began advancing exponentially right now, it would take a longass time before we had the luxury of launching our garbage into the sun.

I would be totally down with launching nuclear missles at the moon, though, that would be kickass. We could launch them at the dark areas of the moon so we could all see them go off. Would also be a good way to get rid of some of the few thousand megatons of nuclear armaments we have built up.

Perhaps we could build a mound or pyramid out of the trash, and make it so tall that we could simple crawl to the top and shovel the trash directly into space.

I think they will destroy it in Jupiter's atmosphere because it would take like 7 or more years for Galileo to reach the sun from where it's at now and it doesn't have enough fuel to do thrust maneuvers in order to get itself into a sun intercepting trajectory. All in all, it would be a waste of time and money, since burning it up in Jupiter's atmosphere is like you peeing in the ocean (negligible pollution risk).

It isn't efficent or plausible right now, but in just a couple years it will basically be a necessity.. landfills are not correctly designed. They seal the top off, allowing no contact with air, and if they didn't do this, the trash would actually decompose over time, as there are microbes that will do that job.. and they still don't even unseal them. Not only that, but we throw our shit away in plastic trashbags.. seals it off even more. heh.
Peace.
