The Problem is, those are the people who are viewed as the ones who speak for all Christians, but in reality, they only speak for themselves.  As a believer in Jesus Christ I know that he wouldn't be saying hateful things to homosexuals or shunning them from the church.  If you are familiar with the bible at all, you would know he was known for making his company with sinners. The bible also says Satan is the god of this world (not to be confused with actually being God Almighty).  So the way I see it is, if Satan is the God of this world, he would just be having a field day with making sure that the mainstream news about Christians is how hateful and unaccepting they are.  Those Christians that are on the news may have some serious soul searching to do.  Many think they're going to Heaven but they aren't.

Sorry if I sounded preachy but you know the gospel of Jesus Christ is just that...  Preachy... it is supposed to be preached.  I don't like that Christians have a bad name.  I do my best to do unto others as I would have them do unto me.  Regardless of belief, gender, race, likes, dislikes etc.  Feed and clothe your friend when he/she is in need.  But also feed and clothe your enemy when he/she is in need, God will bless you for it all the more.  God bless.
