I gotta quit saying I'm a Christian
    #10618899 - 07/04/09 01:48 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I can't be associated with that anymore. :nono:

Like Gahndi said, "I very much like your Christ, it's your Christians that make me sick to my stomach".

Or something like that.

Its not that hard.
You will get funny looks.
Then tell them you don't believe in unicorns or trolls.
Generally they will leave you alone.

I believe the quote was more along the lines of, "Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.", Ghandi was much to humble to say things like that.

How is learning math from a book any different than learning about Christianity from the bible?

Yes, exactly like math. People should question why math is. How does  2 + 2 = 4? It only is because it has been said to be so by someome, and agreed to be so by masses of people thereafter. Why doesn't 2 + 2 = 5? Only because someone decided 2 + 2 = 4 and others accepted it.

The real difference is that math works and religion doesn't.

No, math was discovered, similarly to how electricity was discovered; both of them existed before humans, so neither of them were created by humans, unlike religion.

Please show me a naturally occurring multiplication table or something similar.

Just because math can beautifully capture the behaviour of (parts of) the natural world, doesn't mean that it's an aspect of nature. When you throw a rock there is no consideration on it's part of parabolas, fourth power friction laws or inverse second power gravity laws, there is only the immediate interaction of fields and particles.

To suppose that there are Platonic ideas pushing it all around is no different from saying that God did it.

Let me correct my previous statement: Engineers did 9/11.

Math is just there, it's not a force of nature or anything, it's just kind of a phenomenon of its own. It's always been there, but God only came to be when humans started believing in fairy tales.

Math has not always been there and is not discovered.  It is an invention of the human mind, an abstraction we create to help cope with and describe the natural world.

That said it is much more beneficial than christianity, Im not sure what the debate is.

The debate here is that math wasn't created, it was discovered, as opposed to religion, which was made.

Math is just about the least abstract phenomenon there is...

Math is the most abstract phenomena there is, a pure construction of thought.  It was not discovered anywhere.  It was invented by man, like religion.

I get into this debate pretty regularly in the philosophy forum.

It's not a construct of thought; a construct of thought would be religion, because it was purely invented. Math is as straight-forward as anything can be; do you think that when cavemen counted their bretheren, they created the concept of math right on the spot? No, math just is, and it takes a human to decipher it.

Re: I gotta quit saying I'm a Christian [Re: Anonymous #7]

Of course math is straight forward, that doesn't preclude it from being a construct of the mind.  All operations in mathematics are defined with respect to a set of axioms, axioms that man had invented.  1+1 only equals 2 under a very specific set of axioms.  Posit new axioms and new theorems emerge.

The first 'caveman' did create the concept of math on the spot, just like they created the wheel and just like they created religion.

You are confusing the map with the territory.  Mathematics models nature and reality, it is not nature or reality.  And just like all man made models (or maps) it has varying degrees of accuracy for different phenomenon.

Just saying it doesn't make it so.  What evidence do you have that math exists without humans?  Where has math ever existed except for within a brain?

(perhaps some aliens also invented a form of math, but that is besides the point)

Ok, but that doesn't prove math exists outside of a conceptualization or mental invention.  For example, the wheel is a invention of man.  Now the physics of the universe is what makes the wheel useful for travel, and it has presumably always been that way.  But that doesn't mean the wheel isn't an invention of man - it still is.

Now the physics of the universe lends itself to be described very well by a language of mathematics, but that language is something we invent.  Before there was a spoken language was there even a sun?  We define where the sun is and where it ceases to be using our verbal and mathematical language.  Nature cares not for such distinctions and descriptions.

That said, there are smart mathematicians that believe as you do - that math somehow exists out there and we just happen to find it.  But I think that most mathematicians acknowledge that math is an invention of the human mind.  I know I used to think math was inherent in the universe until I studied it a decent amount then I changed my mind.

Newton didn't discover calculus, he invented it.  Hilbert space does not exist anywhere but in the mind of Hilbert (and others).  Even the number line itself, which I think can be thought of as the most basic of axioms, has be to taught to students - it is not found by them.

Our understanding of math is something we invented, and it may or may not be abstract, but the fact remains that there have been sextillions of stars since before man.

To even define what is and isn't a star you need the conceptualizations of a human brain.  Such distinctions are not inherent in nature.
