Neem oil on edible plants.

So I just went outside to check my spinach plants, and they seem to have an infestation of some sort. I just went to use some neem oil on it because I thought neem oil was safe for humans, and it says this on the packet; "Do NOT use on plants that produce food for human or animal consumption". Obviously I haven't used any because of the label, but I'm just wondering why it would say that at all being such a safe thing to use?

I had been under the impression that it was pretty safe too, do they mention any other ingredients on the label? The neem oil I have doesn't have a warning, but interestingly it also says nothing about insect control at all. They say it's for use as a "leaf shine". You can get food grade fossil shell flour (powdered diatomaceous earth), I wondered about dusting it on foliage for insect control but I'm not sure if it would stick around long enough to be effective. Eating it is apparently perfectly safe though.

Neem oil is an organic pest control remedy that is simple and very effective. Neem oil is pressed out of the seeds obtained from neem trees.

Many gardeners use it for garden pest control of soft bodied insects like aphids, thrips or whitefly. The oil coats the bugs and they suffocate.

Insects would rather die than eat plants treated with neem oil. It disrupts insects’ hormonal balance so they die before they molt to the next life stage. And,

It upsets the insects hormonal system and prevents it from developing to its mature stage.

Neem oil has many complex active ingredients. Rather than being simple poisons, those ingredients are similar to the hormones that insects produce.

Insects take up the neem oil ingredients just like natural hormones.

Neem enters the system and blocks the real hormones from working properly.


Insects “forget” to eat, to mate, or they stop laying eggs. Some forget that they can fly. If eggs are produced they don’t hatch, or the larvae don’t molt.
Obviously insects that are too confused to eat or breed will not survive. The population eventually plummets, and they disappear.

Neem oil makes the plants it touches taste bitter, so pests won’t eat them, as a “contact” insecticide. Insects “forget” to eat after they’ve been in contact with even traces of neem oil.

The greatest benefit of using neem oil is that it doesn’t harm beneficial insects. Butterflies, earthworms, and bees all help plants pollinate or absorb nutrients.

Lacewings eat insects trying to feed on the crops. But these bugs won’t have a negative reaction to neem oil

The main reason is that insects need to ingest the neem oil to be affected, and beneficial insects don’t eat your plants. But you can still kill beneficial insects if you smother them with neem oil, so please be careful.

Beneficial insects are most active during the day. The best time to spray neem insecticide is very early in the morning, so the spray can dry before the good insects become active.

Also a good time is the late afternoon or evening. Once the spray has dried it does not harm your bees, ladybugs, lacewings, predatory mites and wasps etc.

Benefits of neem oil insecticide

    low toxicity, safe for the applicator
    low environmental impact
    organic and biorational
    relatively broad-usage allowed
    easy on beneficial insects and mites

Beside all of the benefits of neem oil the only real downside is that it is not very persistent so may need to be re-applied every few days .

Many gardeners, however, consider this characteristic to actually be another benefit because neem oil insecticide won’t interfere with beneficial insects or delay harvest.

Neem oil kills:

    Garden Snails And Slugs
    Aphids, Armyworms
    Bean Leaf Beetles, Colorado Potato Beetles, Cucumber Beetles, Japanese Beetles
    Moths

    Hornworms, Cabbageworms, Melon worms, Tomato fruit worms

    Ants

    Loopers
    Squash Bugs

    Fruit Fly
    Whiteflies

You can spray vegetables and fruit trees with neem spray right up until the day of harvest. Also, there are no herbs, vegetables or fruit trees that are sensitive to oil sprays.

Soil drenches are designed to get the plant to absorb the neem oil through the roots. There are some vegetables, like onions, cabbages, and tomatoes, that do not like soil drenches with raw neem oil. Spraying, however, is fine.

I've got some mint that was doing great then got invaded on the undersides of the leaves by some miniscule soft-bodied colony and assorted squishy green leafeater worms.  I believe neem oil is safe to ingest but i hope it doesn't make my mojitos taste bad  :uhoh:
Mixed it up with 1/4 tsp bronners peppermint soap, 1-1/2 tsp neem oil, and a quart of water.  Hopefully the soap will make washing the mint an easy task :crazy2:

Here is the deal AnW-
Neem oil is safe to ingest.  It is used in medicine in some counties.  However, because it is an oil, it needs a homogenizing agent in order to be dissolved in water.  The homogenizing agent also acts as a surficant.  Whatever product you have probably says X% neem oil (in which case it contains oil, homogenizing agent, and water) or says 100% neem oil, in which case the water is excluded.  Homogenizing agents generally are somewhat like soaps, with one part of the molecule being polar and another part being non-polar.  Picture what happens when you put soap in greasy water and stir it up. 
I personally would just rinse the stuff off and eat it.  It is still probably safer than any synthetic chemical pesticide available.  You could probably take a shot of whatever neem oil product you have and be just fine.  If you are really scared then you can probably buy food grade neem oil, but it will probably cost a fortune because it must be FDA approved (in the US.)  It could be that the homogenizing agent in your product is perfectly safe to ingest and the company is just covering their ass so that they do not get sued by someone who is allergic to it or the neem oil itself.

Neem oil is great. One day use and I love it.

Just today and it was long overdue. Smells good, IMO.

Anyone have use Rapeseed oil??
The only pesticide i can find here its based rapeseed oil, i wander if its good as neem oil..:justdontknow:

Rapeseed oil is the same as canola oil that has not been bred to be palatable.  Never heard of it being used as a pesticide before.

It is though, i bought it from a garden store and it is from known brand..
Ofcourse i dont know how good work it does.

It would probably work similar to horticultural oils. Some people use cooking oils in home made pesticide concoctions. I haven't experience with it so research and do a test plant first.

Hey! I had the same problem, My mint was colonized by aphides! (white and green!)
Neem oil can be used on edible plants and and farmers use it as a pesticide. There are many pesticides very dangerous for human health, but neem oil isn't.
I suggest you for your mint to change place (partial sun or shade position) if you have it on pot and spraying a solution of garlic mixed with water for some days in the evening. Also I've put on soil of mint some clove of garlic and worked fine for me!
(for the solution let garlic in water for few days in a dark place)

I had some experience with that and plants, is doing decent work bat pests keeps coming on my tomatoes!:sad:
