Ya i know they tried to paint a lot of them as Communists, Gays, etc. I'ld like to think we have changed a lot in those 40-50 years but who really knows. I guess snowden does :rofl:

Snowden openly committed treason though and he knew very well what he was doing.  I still don't get why he would run away to Russia/China probably some of the more repressive governments in the world, when he was concerned about our spy program.

New update from the guardian showing the extent of Microsoft's cooperation.

"Microsoft has collaborated closely with US intelligence services to allow users' communications to be intercepted, including helping the National Security Agency to circumvent the company's own encryption, according to top-secret documents obtained by the Guardian.

The files provided by Edward Snowden illustrate the scale of co-operation between Silicon Valley and the intelligence agencies over the last three years. They also shed new light on the workings of the top-secret Prism program, which was disclosed by the Guardian and the Washington Post last month.

The documents show that:

• Microsoft helped the NSA to circumvent its encryption to address concerns that the agency would be unable to intercept web chats on the new Outlook.com portal;

• The agency already had pre-encryption stage access to email on Outlook.com, including Hotmail;

• The company worked with the FBI this year to allow the NSA easier access via Prism to its cloud storage service SkyDrive, which now has more than 250 million users worldwide;

• Microsoft also worked with the FBI's Data Intercept Unit to "understand" potential issues with a feature in Outlook.com that allows users to create email aliases;

• In July last year, nine months after Microsoft bought Skype, the NSA boasted that a new capability had tripled the amount of Skype video calls being collected through Prism;

• Material collected through Prism is routinely shared with the FBI and CIA, with one NSA document describing the program as a "team sport"."

I guess I see this as pointless. I can't really make sense of this whole Edward Snowden thing because what the NSA is just so inherently stupid it's actually laughable. When was the last time that terrorists all had a skype sesh to discuss their plans of terrorizing America? Pretty sure it's all just a ploy by the government to fuck with people. Cause if America didn't have problems, it would be too perfect. Cause there is no way anyone is stupid enough at a high ranking enough portion of the NSA to actually thing it's a good idea to waste processing power on tapping phones and emails. And I understand that in the case that something were to come up it would be nice to have that information ready, but nothing would be planned over the phone and of course it would all sound innocent. The only times when it seems like it would matter is the point where the actual terrorist act is being performed where they would drop the act over the phone but even that's gonna not be helpful cause it's gonna be so last minute they couldn't analyze and react to it. And another thing, why the fuck would Edward Snowden release this information? America had people killed for less so unless he was ready to die, which I am pretty sure he isn't, he would not have released this information. I guess all I am saying is, if 1+1 doesnt add up to 2, dont you think something is missing?

You'd support them so readily as to call him a traitor? These are the same people that keep those draconian drug laws around. The same ones who've started so many needless wars. They've sold off so much of America to bankers and corporate interests that poverty levels have sky-rocketed in a time of plenty, and still you would call someone who exposes their domestic spy program a traitor? Thats insanity.

Its pretty black and white really, not a whole lot of opinion can be thrown into it. He broke the law by committing a treasonous act.

Obviously i don't support everything my government does (especially the CIA NSA FBI), but I would definitely not do anything to deliberately harm the security of our nation. Like Snowden did.

If you swear an oath to protect and serve the United States of America, You better fulfill that oath or pay the consequences.

Was it really that surprising of news to you that the NSA still does that kind of shit? I dont know if they have ever been open about it but ever since the patriot act went into effect i just assumed they were doing a bunch of shit like this. I don't necessarily agree with what was going on either, but the way Snowden handled it is wrong IMO.

My main question from all of this is how does some fucking loser ass highschool drop out, get into that sensitive of a position in the first place? This whole event should raise some serious questions in Washington about security clearances and contracts.

If Snowden did all that by himself (it does seem to me that he did it out of what he thinks was good nature, misguided albeit), whats to say there isn't a person or group with more malicious intent amongst their ranks (CIA,NSA,FBI, or even a private contractor)?

It seems like Russia and China just set the precedent that if you sell out the US government they will protect you. Kinda fishy times we're entering IMO.

Totally irrelevant but do a lot of Canadians follow American politics?  I'm pretty naive about whats going on up north myself, and I would imagine most of my countrymen are as well.

the amount of stupidity in this thread is painful. Name me in what way he put a single persons life in danger? If the government is wholesale spying on not just the american people but a huge part of the civilized world, thats something the american people should know about. After all, for the people by the people right? lol not anymore. If you are such a die hard patriot and care so much about laws being broken and all that, take in this.  With this act the united states trampled on the fourth amendment which in part protects you against unreasonable search and seizure. If this doesnt constitute as unreasonable then i dont know what the fuck does. Edward snoden is a hero up there with julian assange. And if you cant see that, then thats exactly what they want. welcome to 1984 sheep.

All of them by alerting the scumbags who would kill us to be more cautious and reroute their communications.  To Snowden, "thanks a lot, fuckhead, for alerting our enemies to our methods of tracking them.

Datamining is not spying.  You don't own the language so don't bother with this.  First of all the American government can always spy on you.  All they need is a warrant.  Who grants warrants?  The government.  And fuck that shit about spying on other countries.  Everybody spies.  I'd be pissed off if we didn't.

They cannot possibly monitor everybody's communication.  Julian Assange is a rape charge fugitive from SWEDEN1  If Snowden is innocent let him stand trial.

Do you honestly think that our government's methods of spying are solely focused on the enemy? Out of all of this spying that they are doing, it is nothing more than on US and foreign citizens. This isn't about keeping you safe because if it was than this spying program would have been pointed towards actual terrorists groups (IE war in Afghanistan). You can think that what he did damage us but it only would have damaged us if our government was using the program the right way. Instead what you have now is a never ending surveillance of government agencies (EU embassy) and US and foreign citizens alike. Prism could have been used more directly in the Afghanistan war (a war in which we lost and where the Taliban and al-queda dominate to this day) but instead it is used as nothing more than a means of eventually controlling an entire population while watching and documenting their every move. How can you have faith in such a corrupt system?

i'm sure you will dismiss this and come up with some lame comeback about how edward snowden should be hanged for treason and how we should just suck Obama's balls now and maybe he won't ask again. :wink:

What spying on US citizens are you referring to?  Data-mining is not spying, viewing content still requires a warrant and even then it could get thrown out of court.  The other EU nations are complicit, as Snowden also revealed.

I loathe Obama.  I also loathe Snowden and his ilk of unelected retards who think they should make policy.  He should be dragged back for trial and spend the next 30 years in prison with his fellow traveller Manning.  If he continues to be a fugitive he should be considered a dead or alive case.
