Getting started on my first crop, questions
    #1850033 - 08/25/03 10:34 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I just bought the book "The Mushroom Cultivator" and have been reading up on growing on the internet. I wanted to know how important using and agar culture is? Do you have to start an agar culture first to get the shrooms to grow and then transfer to the grain or can you just go straight to the grain? I have read that you can make the grain spawn and just put the spores directly on the grain and they will grow from there.

I believe the whole thing with agar culture as mentionned on the Mushroom Cultivator is to developpe the best fruiting strain possible by selecting the more rhyzomorphic sector and transfering them to another petri dish until you have a *pure* fruiting strain.

This book was written around 1982. New and easier techniques are now available. The PF-tek is probably where you wanna start. Just read about it. With the PF-tek, you do a multispore inoculation with a syringe containing spores and water. Multispores inoculation gives you most of the time (if not always) a fruiting strain. Then, you can simply birth the cake and watch the shrooms grow or use the mycellium grown in the jar and transfer it to grain or bulk for more advanced cultivation techniques (not necessarely more complicated).

You can also use the honey tek and inoculate (still with a syringe)a jar filled with sterile solution of 4% honey and 96% water. You will then grow some *liquid mycellium* that can be transfered to any substrate for a faster colonization (since spores already germinated).

So in brief, the Mushroom Cultivator says you must start a culture with Agar but there's plenty other ways now that can be done without agar. On the other hand, scraping some spores directly into grain is probably not a good idea. I guess it may works but chances of failure are in my opinion, too high to risk your spores.

good luck!

Here's a good reference for the PF-TEK (with pictures!!!) :

All the teks and cultivation faqs are also hosted here, on shroomery.org . Have a look and invest some time in reading!! It definately worths it!!

Thanks for the help. Where can I buy brown rice powder and vermiculite? I have never seen these things in the grocery store.

look in the shroomery faq! TMC is the best reference you can have, but the PF tek is designed to give nearly foolproof results for the uninitiated.

Brown rice flour can be found in most groceries (the big ones) or health food store.

You don't wanna eat verm! Garden stores carry vermiculite. It has basically two functions, i believe.

1- Mixed with potting soil, it makes the soil *breath* a little more.

2- Mixed with Brown Rice Flour, it makes your spores happy.
