I want to get a Mandolin.

For years I've wanted to get into stringed instruments but I didn't take much interest because everyone already knew how to play guitar.  I have however wanted to learn how to play the mandolin.  So now I want to purchase a mandolin.  What should I look for and what price range for a beginner?

Mandolin is a fun instrument but the fingerboard is pretty cramped if you have large hands and it's a little finicky to tune. It can also be hard to hear yourself in loud settings. The tuning is the same as violin/fiddle, so fiddle music works out to easy fingerings. I play Irish music.

I started out on mandolin but I switched to tenor banjo and tenor guitar, same tuning in a lower octave and larger fingerboards. Octave mandolin and mandola are also nice instruments, bigger versions of a mandolin basically.

Someone I know got a new Epiphone mandolin for something like $200, sounds decent enough for the money. $400 would probably get you something nicer, and $1000 or more might get you something really nice with some history. Gibson made some pretty nice mandolins over the years from what I understand.

You can get an entry-level mandolin for $115-200 at your local chain music-superstore (Guitar Center, etc).

Mandolin is tuned like a violin.  Better have a good picking hand to play mandolin.  If you look, you can probably get a decent one for about $200. 

I used to have a mandolin, but me and some friends where out drinking in the Philippines, in the Navy, and my friend got in a fight and this Samoan dude broke the Mandolin over my friends head.  :sad:
