A teacher north of Montreal risks suspension after telling her high school students that she drowned seven newborn kittens on her property before beating an eighth one to death with a wooden board.

The school board responsible for the school in Deux-Montagnes, Que., just north of Montreal, opened an investigation after the parents complained.

Instead of reviewing material that was to be on the final exam, the teacher reportedly recounted how an errant cat birthed a litter on her property, according to a spokeswoman of the school board who spoke to QMI Agency.

She allegedly told her students she first tried to drown the animals with a hose. When that method didn't work, she allegedly drowned the kittens in a water-filled plastic bag.

One kitten survived the second drowning attempt and the teacher allegedly said that she beat the animal to death with a wooden plank.

School board spokeswoman Melanie Poirier, said the board "is taking the issue very seriously." She added that the teacher will be suspended if the school board can confirm what the parents and students say happened.

The head of the local SPCA said the alleged actions of the teacher are illegal.

"If the alleged facts of the case are proven, she could be fined up to $25,000," said Corinne Gonzales.

Gonzales said the teacher could have taken less extreme measures than allegedly killing the kittens.

"There are errant animal refuges," she said. "The teacher could have called one of them and a home could have been found for the kittens."
