Frickin CHIGGERS!!! * 1
    #18245436 -

Hello Hunters! I hope this isn't considered off topic. It has everything to do with field hunting, so I don't think it is. I have been roaming and exploring the woods, fields and streams since I was a kid. From the wetlands of Alabama and Florida, to the foothills and mountains of North Carolina. Even spent ALOT of time in the field (literally) with the 82nd Airborne at FT Bragg.(HOO-AAH!) Yeah, I have had my share of ticks and mosquitos along the way. Nothing a can of Deep Woods OFF could not take care of. But recently, after a good long break from the outdoors(marriage), I have taken up mushroom hunting. Love it. Gives me a reason to recapture a little of my childhood. But in 40 years of active outdooring, I have NEVER had a problem with chiggers like I have this spring. Apparently they have grown immune to OFF, Cutter, Repel. I am eat up with them as I speak, from my ankles to my waist. and EVERYWHERE in between. Do any of you veteran hunters out there have any tried and true repellants? In the army we were told to eat two match heads a day to ward off blood suckers but I never tried it. Kinda sounded like an ol wives tale type deal. I know the best way to prevent them would be to stay out of their domain, but that just aint gonna happen. What are yalls thoughts on this?

Eat it? And if so, how much and how long does it take to be effective? With the match heads, it was told, they had to be eaten consistently for a few days for the sulfur to get into the bloodstream. I have enough "chemicals" surging through my veins without adding sulfur to the mix.

Citronella sounds intriguing. Wife will be of no help with beauty supplys. she is an "all natur-al" beauty. (that's the truth. No joke intended there)

Yeah its pretty dern early for all these ticks , too! They are absolutely out in DROVES! And I also have been vigilantly picking them off of me despite being soaked in repellant. Despite the dangers that go along with ticks, they, at the moment, are the least of my problems. I have had one other terrible chigger encounter a long time ago when I was enlisted. We were conducting IMT maneuvers and I was forced to lie down in a patch of them. I can still remember seeing them crawling up my rifle barrel. They contrast nicely against black color. I was covered head to toe in them by the time the maneuvers were complete. I reported to field medic for a remedy and, get this, was quarantined for CHICKEN POX until tests confirmed negative. I tried to tell them I had already had C. pox as a kid and that this was only a bad chigger infestation. Did not matter. Dumb asses would not listen. Any way, early or not, that's what I have now and in full force. This is an itching hell that you just don't forget.

Citronella and Catnip both contain terpenes that act as natural bug repellants to the plants. Catnip is supposedly more effective than DEET. Look it up! Also, I eat like a handfull of fresh sprigs in the morning sometimes, that seems to work wonders, but you can also just rub leaves on your ankles and your neck and such. Bring a baggie of leaves with you and re-apply every half hour maybe.

There is nothing quite like getting back to the barracks after a long ftx and finding you are a host to several dozen ticks, fire ants and spiders.

I don't know if it poison ivy or chiggers, but I have a red bumpy line on my forearm that perfectly tracks the vein underneath it for about two inches.

I don't think I've ever had so many different blisters, marks, scratches and holes as I've gotten in the past week. I pulled a minute tick off my butt cheek yesterday and it itches like hell this morning. On the front side, I managed to get poison ivy on my dick.

Are you sure they are chiggers? For the longest time what I thought were chiggers turns out to have been stinging nettles. You don't expect a plant to have such a delayed reaction. You can brush up against them and not feel anything for a while, then get a burning rash that lasts a couple hours. Chiggers are more like scabies, and leave little tunnels under your skin that look like someone has drawn of you.

Well I just hear people saying that...But I did some research and found this. It appears there is no correlation between DEET and cancer rates in animal studies, but they haven't ever tested it on humans, so who knows. They do list DEET as a class D carcinogen, which means it has little potential to give cancer when used properly. Then they mention the thing about DEET and seizures, but of course, that is with improper use, whatever that may be. I assume someone did a DEET enema.
