Am I the Only Hunter In North Carolina(besides college students}?
    #18301428 -

First of all, I will address the main subject of this post. I realize that north central NC may not be the best area for actives, but there are PLENTY of other intriguing mushrooms around here. I admit that the desire to find the elusive Panaeolus cinctulus started me on this quest. And even though I am still on the hunt for cincts, I no longer venture out on hunts with cincts alone in my sights. The thrill for me, now, has become finding that ONE, perfect, photogenic mushroom. As addictive as this activity has become to me, I find it hard to believe no one else from this area seems to be interested in it. I hope someone posts and proves me wrong. I would love to share and compare information with someone relatively local.
Now, as far as the hunt went today, it was HOT!! Maybe not so much hot as humid. I have not felt humidity that suffocating since I left south Alabama. I could not look down to hunt without my glasses (spectacles, for you high falootin folks) smearing with sweat. But I did hunt long enough to see that every other dung pile was alive with BEAUTIFUL Panaeolus papilionaceus. They were absolutely EVERYWHERE and in full form. But yet, no sign of the cincts. Yet.
I did come across one interesting unknown though. I had every intention of collecting it for further identification, but it was so fragile and brittle, it practically disintegrated before I could get through the photo documenting. Speaking of photos, this was the first time I have used this particular digital. I could not get the macro to focus correctly to save my life. Its SUPPOSED to take EXCELLENT detailed close ups, but apparently I'm doing something wrong. Gonna do some research on this situation after I complete this post. I plan to be back in the field at day break. Hopefully the mushroom gods will smile upon me for a change. Later!!

This is all I have of the Unknown found in horse dung. I really wanted to get a positive ID on this one, but keeping it in one piece was not meant to be..

I am aware that P. paps are very common and not very "exotic", but these specimens were just awesome. ( At least I thought so)

1) Maybe close to Conocybe albipes
2) Panaeolus papilionaceus

I do believe that you are the only mushroom hunter North Carolina.

Hey! While I have all you pros On the line, what do yall think the possibilities of finding ovoids around the NC/VA border? I know they seem to mainly thrive around the Ohio River Valley, but WOW at some of the perfect habitat spots I have come across around here. Japanese stilt grass, creek bottoms, and the whole nine yards. How far south have ovoids been found?

Ok. So what is your theory of how that one little ovoid made it all the way down to Georgia and missed all the states in between? Maybe a rogue spore caught in the jet stream? Or could it be, that with the lack of observers, they may be going unnoticed and thriving in peace predator free?  Also, is the date correct? Was this ovoid in Georgia actually found growing in March?

Idk, pretty cool though. I would like to look for them around here, but that habitat looks so perfect for snakes...

Ohhhhh but yes it is VERY snakey. But they don't bother me. That is, as long as I see them first. As Yall have come to learn about me, Bees, Hornets and the like, are my only kryptonite in the wilds. Also yall may have learned that I don't talk in the same language that I write. LOL. I guess that video clip DID kinda throw yall a loop!

I'm glad you enjoyed that. I thought yall might get a kick out of that one. Hell, I did not even realize the depth of my "drawl". Hopefully I can post some more antics such as that one sometime soon. I was just over in MO checking out NC finds and I noticed wintersbefore had posts from NC. I thought he/she was from Tennessee. What's the story on that BJ?

Tennessee is close to N. Carolina... She's dedicated to mycology... She travels there to hunt I suppose... We actually went to North Carolina when I was in Gatlinburg for the foray... We went to Joyce Kilmer, it was cool, the weather didn't provide us with many mushrooms though...

Ok. I thought maybe she must be near the border. The climate and geography in that neck of the woods are worlds different than here. More rain falls on that side of the Appalachian chain. I am nestled on the lee side of the mountains at the bottom of the foothills. any precipitation coming from yalls direction gets "raked" out by the mountains and we never see it. The only significant rainfall we get here has to travel from the gulf region up along the east side of chain, otherwise we get nothing. With the exception of spring and summer pop up storms. We normally stay in drought conditions through the summer due to the mountains that separate us. Even the stronger fronts that hold together over the Appalachians get broken up over our area and regroup usually around Raliegh. But at the same time, we don't have to worry much about damaging tornados here. I also just noticed that she found  Psilocybe caerulipes here in Carolina. Is that not considered an ovoid?

She is like a ghost, appearing where the mushrooms are, immediately photographing and vacuuming up everything interesting, neatly tucking the herbarium specimens into immaculately washed tackle boxes.  Rumor has it that she is invisible to security cameras also.

Psilocybe caerulipes are not considered ovoids.  Only Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata are ovoids.  Psilocybe caerulipes has the common name of "bluefoot".  Common names are silly though, if you are going to be into mushrooms you should just use the latin.

Ok. Thank you for clearing that up. There seemed to be some sort of debate on the two of them when I did some "spot research" on them. I am doing my best to learn all the proper terminology and Latin names. Its tough doing this alone though. You guys here at shroomery are the only people I have to guide me through this. All my friends and family think I have gone off my rocker. It is a shame I cant make a lucrative profession out of this without some sort of college degree. I really need to start spending more time in the local library to learn the correct pronunciation of the latin terms. That would be an excellent start. I am sure that I am MURDERING the correct way of pronouncing the mushrooms especially with my backwoods dialect. OH Hell fire! Two more hours till daybreak. Time to get my hunting gear together. Gotta practice with this new digital a bit too. Having a time figuring out the macro feature on this one.

I plan to do so. Its going to be hard to follow up the first one, though. I actually recorded one yesterday but I was not happy with the outcome. But yes, I am working on that. I can't believe the popularity the first one received. My cousin from Alabama, who is an AVID outdoorsman and deer hunter used to video and narrate his outings all the time. I would spend hours watching his footage. I realized when I made my clip just how much alike we sounded. He is a story teller though.(Not a LIAR, He is great at telling stories.) Me, not so much. I'm more of a listener. I was rather excited with adrenaline pumping when I shot my footage. That made me a bit more talkative, I reckon.

I live about a little over an hour from the border. My observations from NC are from the NAMA Wildacres Foray, or from a two week biodiversity inventory for the GSMNP, or from times that I've visited Joyce Kilmer. Thinker and vjp collect in North Carolina.

So, basically your personal NC observations (finds) have been in the "high country" of the state. And it appears that vjp and thinker are covering (but not limited to) the eastern side.(Low country) It is apparent that you are a certified mycologist. What about vjp and thinker? Are they career mycologist or are they "weekend warriors" so to say? Would it be of any benefit for me to post all my finds to MO or only the exotic and rare finds? I am assuming anyone can post there. I would like to participate in contributing my observations but only if it deems productive and helpful. Lord knows I take my share of photos, I'm just not very good at identifying them yet.

They don't give certifications for mycologists, I am a graduate student, I do research on fungal systematics and evolution.

You should always post your finds if you have photos that make them identifiable (clear shots of the cap, gills, stipe) and eventually, if your really interested, its most useful if you were to preserve and keep your specimens...

Mushroom Observer is a great place to post ALL of your finds! There is an Asheville Mushroom Club which appears to be pretty active. Not sure how close you are to that area.

Oh lordy. I aint got a thing against anybody. Did not mean to come across like that. I was insinuating that a student would be on a different agenda than someone like myself who hunts to find peace of mind. Does that make sense? About the best way to explain that. Plus, a student may be reluctant to hunt with me. Hell, sometimes I'M reluctant to hunt with me. Speaking of hunting, I just returned from a forest hike. Hence the reason for a delayed reply to this post. A lot of times I end up in very precarious places that a sane person would not dare venture.
I'm going to read up on the MO situation. If I am going to do this, I want to do it right. Thanks for everyone's help. Gotta go prepare tonights post.
