WAY Too Close For Comfort...
    #18266755 -

SHOOOOOOOO-WEEEEee, Hunters!!! I am feeling EXTREMELY fortunate to be sitting here sharing with Yall tonight. My Official 2013 Mushroom Hunting Season came VERY close to an abrupt and early end today. I am still not sure how I avoided certain disaster. Call it luck, Devine Intervention or maybe, "it just wasn't my time". I like to believe that my Guardian Angel was slamming Red Bulls and was 110 percent on point this afternoon. Had I been wearing my earphones (like I normally do when hunting solo)my life would would be in a terrible way right about now. If I still had any life at all. Check out this short video clip I recorded directly after my narrow and ,to me, unbelievable escape. WARNING: If you are easily offended by vulgar language, or if kids are present, you may want to refrain from viewing. My nerves were still rattled as I recorded. Between being alone, (no one to hear me) and still in utter shock that I actually made it through this unscathed, I was OBLIVIOUS to the venom I was spewing. At least until I reviewed clip upon returning home. It actually is rather humorous. Now that its over. I hope I load this video code correctly. My first attempt.... Bear with me...

I've also had some pretty close calls with wasp and hornet nests, but nothing like that.  Anyone have any advice for how to deal with or spot them before it's too late?  Regular bug repellant doesn't seem to work

Whats really crazy about this is I have been walking and scouting this pasture since Mid April. I bet I have walked this same route, with slight variances, over a dozen times. I had kinda succumbed to a certain "comfort" level in this particular hunting ground. Don't get me wrong, I am constantly aware of my surroundings. No matter where I am. But this incident really should have took me down and probably out. I still think back on it and have to shudder at what SHOULD have been.
Oh, and far as prevention goes, I really don't think there is anything out there on the market that could even come close to stopping that size swarm once they zero in on ya. RUN LIKE A SCALDED RABBIT and PRAY you have some sort of shelter or body of water to help shield yo rear end. You can spray all and anything you want to at them. And you may even kill a few. But in the end, if they want ya, they GONNA get ya!

I've been encountering huge swarms of ground bees. They don't seem to give a shit if you stand right in the middle of them, though.

No way! Bees are an extremely important part of the ecosystem. The best thing to do is avoid disturbing them.

Pfft bunch of girls on shroomery... Without bees our entire world is rather fucked. No food for anyone! Bees pollinate all plants!

Seriously, I was expecting the OP to be stepping on some venomous snake or falling into a pit of crocodiles/alligators...

You guys are a bunch of pansies. Leave the poor bees alone.

What's next? Someone shits their dacks cos of a squirrel?

Until some small child finds them and gets stung to death !

But no, I agree. Bees are cool and should be respected.

Bees will normally not attack unless they sense imminent danger to their hive.
The common wasps (Vespula sp.) however, are quite uptight and nervous when
it comes to territory, and will be on guard. I've accidentally stepped on wasp
nests a couple of times when I was younger, I can't remember I ever ran faster
but I was extremely lucky and didn't get a single sting...

I've heard from several people that If you do disturb a hive or are near someone else that does you should stand very still and slowly walk away after the initial surge of bee's. i have no experience with this but I was told if you run they swarm after you and sting you because its easier for them to target movement. My uncle said it happened at a party he was at once and everyone ran except for him and he was closer than most to the hive and didn't get stung even once. Those that ran got hit pretty bad.

I got nailed by some yellow jackets last week and my hand blew up for a day. All part of the job of the mushroom hunter.

That is pretty cool, not scary at all unless you don't watch where you step and step right on them...

this. OP are you highly allergic to bee stings or something?

You really weren't as close to death as you may think. It's just a bee's nest.

Bald-faced hornets will sting you for walking within a few feet of the nest, I know of no other that will do this.

Yes I in 1oo percent agreement. I can deal with spiders, snakes, and all other creepy crawlies, no problem. But TO HELL with anything that can fly and sting. I have had TOO many very bad episodes in my lifetime with yellow jackets, jap hornets and the likes of the demon bugs. I just KNEW them Africanized Bastards were gonna put me down for good. Still cant believe I got away incident free. And I am from Alabama originally. Three years in Florida and the rest of my years in North Carolina.

And as far as this being a pathetic thread, I suppose that falls into the  old "Opinions and Assholes" category and I personally had no idea, nor intent , that this thread could POSSIBLY be offensive to any one or cause  any drama whatsoever. Im almost in disbelief. But if it makes any difference, I do Sincerely Apologize. I personally thought the clip was HILLARIOUS. Apparently, its been a LONG time since I have "heard myself talk". I had no idea my accent was that strong. And I PROMISE yall this, that was as genuine as it gets. And yes, a person is not SUPPOSED to run like I did. And about the time I was into my second bounding stride, I thought about this very subject. But I was already extremely committed to this spur of the moment decision. as I stated earlier, Flying Stingers, no matter what species, have been my Achilles heel starting from a young age. When I looked up and realized That I was SUDDENLY in very critical range of being swarmed. Im not even going to claim the old "if I had taken two more steps" routine. I was on them. They SHOULD have been on me. Any other time I have accidently invaded their space, the hateful bastards have NEVER shown ANY  mercy what so ever. I really was not expecting anything less in this situation. My adrenaline was at max level from anticipating the the beating I was about to have to take from HUNDREDS, (100)'eds of angry, swarming bees. So that may have contributed to the accent. Being born and bred in South Bama may have a little something to do with it. Hard to say

:tongue2: In all actuality, the sole purpose of making the clip was to show my step-brother where to keep his sixteen kids away from. Yeah, I'm exaggerating a little.(but not by much!) After I had calmed down a bit and later reviewed the footage, I found it to be more entertaining than most of the crap on tv  that they try to push on us as "prime" viewing. After seeing my wifes reaction to it, I could not help but to share it with fellow hunters.

You watch videos like these before hunting?

I could see a lot of danger if you were far out in the woods with no way to contact people.
You would still probably be hospitalized if you got swarmed. Hard to tell how many from the video.

This thread has gotten pretty off topic for this forum... we should prolly let it expire.
