How about any grade school Civics class?

d33p is correct. The political classification of the United States of America is that of a constitutionally limited republic, not a Democracy. The representatives to the legislative branch are elected through a direct vote of the citizens. The members of the executive branch are elected through an indirect vote of the citizens. The members of the judiciary are appointed by the executive and confirmed by the legislative branch.

Federal laws are not passed through referenda (direct vote of the citizenry) as they would be in a Democracy but by the legislative branch. The only time "democracy" is involved is in the election of the president/vice president and congressmen and senators.

A Republic, If You Can Keep It
by Jacob G. Hornberger, November 2001

At the close of the Constitutional Convention, a woman asked Benjamin Franklin what type of government the Constitution was bringing into existence. Franklin replied, ?A republic, if you can keep it.?

Regardless of one?s judgment concerning the type of government that the Constitution brought into existence in 1787, no one can deny that it was truly the most unusual and radical in history.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

True, but those people are wrong.
