Syd Barrett appreciation thread * 1
    #18192002 -

After searching many upon many of Pink Floyd threads I failed to see any threads dedicated to the genius that is Syd Barrett.  I actually saw far to many people who have no idea what they are talking about saying the Wall is the best album.  So I am here to say lets band together fellow true Floyd fans and celebrate that is arguably the greatest musician of all time.

I prefer the later stuff when he left the band, they just jammed better when he left the band.

That is because Roger Waters took over most of the song writing. That is what eventually led to the band's breakup. A power struggle between Roger and David. I like Syd's stuff too, but I like the later stuff better as well; mostly starting with Obscured By Clouds. And truthfully, Roger was the soul of Pink Floyd. After he left, the Pink Floyd album David put out was just not the same.

Syd is awesome but towards the end of his run some of the shit got real weird... I agree with them kicking him otherwise the band never could of reached the amount of success that they did.

I enjoy Pink Floyd's time with Syd, there are a few songs I like in which he provided the vocals. But like the majority of Floyd fans, I like the later albums a whole lot more than Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

This is one of the better songs that he did solo:

Syd barrett is possibly one of my favorite guitarists. I know he wasn't as technically proficient as some but his creative genius cannot be overstated.

I'd say that the solo syd is more enjoyable than piper, but thats just me.

What I really wanna hear is Stars, the band he formed for only a short time after his solo stint. No recordings are around though.

Roger being the soul of the band is a total joke every album after Piper they tried to re-inact his style.

i wish that the band never had the amount of success.

solely because Syd Barret was the better musician, and gave PF a chance in the biz... and he's solely the only member, who is looked upon as being useless.

he MADE PF what they were. PF would not exist without Syd.

plus, Syd helped the band make more unique and interesting music, for the time.

He also was a huge part of the reason Pink Floyd got hit with the "space rock" genre which is something none of the other members really wanted.

He did too much drugs, his music wasn't that inspirational to anyone else at a certain point and then he had to go. I swear his style ended up just being him pounding on pots and pans or some shit in a room while tripping balls.

yeah... the other members sucked ass for that.

oh and like i said, Syd Barret's music was more unique and inspiring that way. he made PF more then just another jam band.

I respect your opinion, but mine is just as valid. Honestly, to me, the styles are so different, I do not see how post-Syd Barrett Pink Floyd is anywhere near trying to re-create his style. If there are any similarities, I would mark that up to Roger Waters being the constant factor in the band. Now, post-Roger Waters Pink Floyd was definitely trying to be like classic PF. Personally, I do not think PF would have achieve the fame they did with Syd still in the band. That band needed Roger to take over. If David Gilmore got his way, The Wall would have never seen the light of day. The Final Cut too for that matter.

I don't care what anyone says, Syd was and is the best member of Floyd.
