Not the case I have nearly all of the discography to both of those bands. (Don't have all the stones)  I fucking really dig the Beatles.  I just really love how Gilmore (even when bandleader) never uses his guitar solos in a "Look at me" way.
They always add to the overall song.  I personally think the sign of maturity in a talented musician is to know when to hold off.  As I was always told being a Jazz musician "The rests are where the soul lies.".

While I was making a blanket statement, the truth resides that syd is at least in a closer vein to the beatles than later floyd. Almost like the beatles and syd took the more classical route and later floyd went jazz.

I am inclined to agree. I think early floyd sounds like a ripoff of the beatles mixed with maybe a little above average late 60's psychedelic rock. where as early 70's floyd really sounds redic n like nothing else really.

Yep Rubber soul thru the White album are definitely psychedelic. listen to the end of "a day in the life" after the songs over, thats one trippy sounding loop there.

Not if you're like me and think that those two albums (not to mention the pre-album singles and B-sides) are Floyd's finest.







This. Piper and all the singles are in my opinion easily the best Floyd material. And The Madcap Laughs is a work of art.
