really, syd may have been the lead while he was still realativly coherent (if you can call any of his ramblings coherent), but if he would have stuck around, nobody wouldknow about or give a fuck about pink floyd today.

syd started a band was comical at best
waters and gilmore (and wright and mason of course) created a new one with the same name that is one of the greatest ever.
the best credit i'll give syd, is that his insanity heavily influenced one of the best albums of all time, WYWH....

So true, i bet we would of know nothing of my favorite band is syd stuck around. He may of been apart of the starting part, but gilmore,waters MADE that band what it is.

Comparing Piper at the Gates of Dawn to the rest of Floyd's albums is like comparing apples and oranges... they were just two different bands.

Similarly, I think The Wall and The Final Cut are so different from WYWH, Meddle, DSOTM, etc, that they also can't be compared.

Three different bands, imo, one led by Barret, one gilmour, and one waters.

I like every Pink Floyd album, all in different ways.

pf after 68 was another band. super mega band that was, imho, boring.
before they had found, in waters words, the chicken who layed the golden eggs.
barrett was an artist, painter and poet (used also Joyce) and his sy Estesia was perfect for that times..
the others were just in  for the money
Gilmore was a long time friend and quite gifted technically but to me barrett ideas were amazing, he wrote all the 1st album but playing every single day was too much.. it's a tough life..

Link does not work, also anything waters says is a lie he's an ex-heroin addict who was sick of not being the front man even though he was the bassist so he turned the band against Syd in order to make a shitty album like the wall.

I don't agree either.  Syd years aren't nearly as good as the Gilmore years.

Gilmour is a genius in his own right as he wrote most of the music and waters stole it that's why in court he's only aloud to preform the wall.  But syds 1 Floyd album and solo stuff blows dsotm and various other albums out of the water

I can compare them.  Sure music is subjective.  But you're just being obtuse if you think anything Syd did came close to the Gilmore years. 
His melodies are damn near haunting.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a man with serious mental illness making music and it's quiet trippy.  Dark side of the moon is an album TRYING to describe what mental illness is, and wish you we're hear is an written confession that they done fucked up.

I love Gilmour dude he's the best person that could have filled Syds shoes I even pay tribute to him in my last gif in my sig I agree all I'm saying is that Syds erratic and drug fueled behavior sounds better to me when my hands turning into a dragon that's all

I feel like those who clearly prefer sydless floyd aren't gonna be big on rolling stones or the beatles. Makes sense to me, cortex, that your tastes reside elsewhere. But, maybe to expand your breadth of musical understanding, try sitting down at a piano and making a diddy like the ones they did.
