Was Diogenes the original Western troll? * 1
    #17957902 -

Diogenes of Sinope seems like a very early version of an internet troll to me in every way shape and form. All of his actions seem to have been made with the sole intent of annoying, critizing, or getting a ruse out of people. Rather than simply rejecting Athenian life he decided to live smack dab in the middle of everything in an amphora mocking everyone and generally being an ass.

Case in point is his conversation with Alexander The Great:
Quote:
[...]Alexander then declared, "If I were not Alexander, then I should wish to be Diogenes.", to which Diogenes replied "If I were not Diogenes, I should also wish to be Diogenes."

Huge ego? Check!
Quote:
He used to stroll about in full daylight with a lamp; when asked what he was doing, he would answer, "I am just looking for an honest man." Diogenes looked for a human being but reputedly found nothing but rascals and scoundrels.

I think this needs no explanation.
Quote:
When Plato gave Socrates' definition of man as "featherless bipeds" and was much praised for the definition, Diogenes plucked a chicken and brought it into Plato's Academy, saying, "Behold! I've brought you a man."

Likewise.

And finally:
Quote:
Diogenes is said to have eaten in the marketplace [apparently one of the most offensive things you could do in Athenian culture], urinated on some people who insulted him, defecated in the theatre, masturbated in public, and pointed at people with his middle finger.

From Life of Diogenes: "Someone took him [Diogenes] into a magnificent house and warned him not to spit, whereupon, having cleared his throat, he spat into the man's face, being unable, he said, to find a meaner receptacle."

Seems to me that really he is just the ancient version of an internet troll though without the internet he decided to just reside in the center of Athenian life and interact with everyone which was the closest offline social parallel to the internet/message boards.

Are there earlier more apparent trolls in history excluding mythology which is full of pranksters in every culture?

But no, in response to your question, I haven't heard of many historical figures who would be as trollish as Diogenes.
Plenty of batshit insane ones, but those are a dime-a-dozen.

There's also another one where Alexander the Great offered him anything in the land he wanted, to which Diogenes replied "You're standing in my sunshine". :trollhide:

Hmmm, other philosophers who belong to a school of Cynics (besides a certain member here, who also prefers dogs to people [and with which I concur]), this comes to mind:

We are the other people
We are the other people
You're the other people too
Found a way to get to you...
Do you think that I'm crazy?
Out of my mind?
Do you think that I creep in the night
And sleep in a phone booth?

Lemme take a minute & tell you my plan
Lemme take a minute & tell who I am
If it doesn't show
Think you better know
I'm another person.
Do you think that my pants are too tight
Do you think that I'm creepy?

Lemme take a minute & tell you my plan
Lemme take a minute & tell who I am
If it doesn't show
Think you better know, I'm another person.

Lemme take a minute just to say I don't care
Shut your fucking mouth about the length of my hair
How would you survive, if you were alive,
Shitty little person.

We are the other people
We are the other people
You're the other people too
Found a way to get to you
We are the other people
We are the other people
You're the other people too
Found a way to get to you

Do you think that I love you...
Stupid & blind?
Do you think that I dream through the
Night, of holding you near me?

Lemme take a minute & tell you my plan
Lemme take a minute & tell who I am
If it doesn't show
Think you better know
I'm another person.

The renter of m'Lady's inherited apartment, gave me a candle lamp for Christmas (probably a regift) that somewhat resembles The Hermit's. I'm not gonna bother walking around Miami with it though. The only honest man I've seen down here lives in my mirror. Well, I seem to be MORE honest than anyone else I've seen here at any rate. :frown: What a simple discipline to practice: Do not lie. And yet, if my ex-wife, my employers, co-workers, 'superiors,' doctors, dentists, cops, service providers of every type, acquaintances, my brother, adolescents, and even a childhood friend aren't lying to me, they're lying to themselves while going about their self-destructive lives. We're all headed to destruction, but in the process, give me honesty so that I can become more honest myself, and attain to Clarity, like a mythic Scientologist's 'Clear,' or better yet, a Buddhist Vajrasattva.

I only went to the Fillmore East twice, and it was to see The Mothers of Invention both times. I also caught a couple of Schaeffer Music Festivals for free in NYC's Central Park sometime during the summers of '68 and '70.

Maybe I should dig out the two Fillmore Fliers I have in my memorabilia, photo-copy them and send them to you. Leaving for the airport shortly to put m'Lady on a flight to Atlanta and thence to Johannesburg, then Cape Town South Africa for 2.5 weeks. I'll have to look for those fliers, I know I still have them. One show had a band called Insect Trust as a warm up.
