Coco Coir availability
    #1785572 - 08/06/03 03:35 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Where in the WORLD (locally, rather) can I find some Coco Coir?!?!?  Let's see...I've been to Meijers, Wal-Mart (SuperStore), Target, Franks Garden Center, and a local horticulture shop --- And NONE have Coco Coir.. (nobody even knows what it is)

For future reference, how is coco coir pronounced phenetically?

koko ko-ir?
koko quar?

I ended up having to spell it out for everybody I asked, and only one woman had a CLUE about what I was talking about..

What gives? Why doesn't anybody have this stuff? (I really don't wanna order online and pay for shipping)

Any alternatives?

"What's it used for?"

"Umm.. Composting, I think...."

*WRONG**

I got a GIANT brick of it at the local hydro shop for twelve bucks. I did not realize how much it expands.

has anyone been having problems finding vermiculite too? i remember last year getting it at walmart and home depot. Now i have to either buy a huge $50 bag of it at the Depot or drive 45 min. away to pay $6 for a little bag.

i heard that it was causing cancer, but i dunno if that is true.

Yeah, I've had similar problems with the verm here. Home depot still sells it, but like you said, the bags are the size of my car. I've had the most luck with nurseries and garden specialty shops. I guess not everyone has that luxury though.

Oh, and if you are looking for coco coir. You have to call it by brand name. Ask for "bed a beast" and say it's for your iguana. Everyone around here looks at you like your crazy if you walk into a pet shop and start asking for coco coir.

Can you chop up Coco coir bricks before soaking them if you only want to use a bit?

yeah, but you have to use a saw to do it. Tough stuff. I've heard you can peel off layers with a knife but i've never tried. Just use a lot less than you think you will need 'cause you will be amazed at how much the stuff expands.
