coco coir 50/50 tek help

Hello,

I can't find any peat moss in the local stores, but there are bricks of coconut, so I'm going to use it to make a 50/50 casing. Does it need calcium carbonate as well? And what about sterilizing? Should I bake it after I pour the water on it to make it expand?

don't know about the other questions but just break off a piece and then pour boiling hot water over the coco coir, give it like 15 minutes and it'll expand. Don't use a lot, just a small pieces expands to a very large amount.

I soak the coco to capacity, bake at 350 for 1 hour, and then add distilled water as needed. Have tried other methods in the past, but my rate of casing contaminations has dropped noticeably since I ditched the microwave and started baking. Not sure about the calcium carbonate - I usually mix the coco with Jiffy Mix. Now that I can't find it, I'm mixing 50:25:25 coco:verm:peat and throwing in a handful of oyster shell. My casing problems SEEM to be corrected now, haven't had a contam start in any of the casings with this mix. Yet.

I've used straight coco and plain tap water & had no probs.

cool thanks for the tips.. I'm going to add a little calcium carbonate cause the brick's PH is 5.4-6.8. With just a little shot of calcium carbonate I should be able to bring the PH close to neutral 7, and I'm going to bake it for an hour, just to make sure.
