1. The "strange orange growth" could have been the mycellium taking a shit (so to speak)

2. The jar that is stalled (with uncolonized portions) most likely has a contamination growing inside of the cake, which you can't see.

3. The grayish mycellium you speak of is a form of contamination (I'm guessing without pictures, though)

4. The little white balls are the fruits beginning to pin. If you have 100% colonization and these lil white balls, birth it!

5. The jars with pins that aren't 100% colonized are probably contaminated inside, as well.

Mushrooms will grow in the jars if they are not birthed, and they'll even grow on unbirthed, partially colonized, contaminated jars. (but don't eat em...)

thanks for the help!!! on the grayish jars, i wanted to hold on to them and see what happens. they are 100% colonized. i dont want to keep it in the terranium with the healthy ones, of course. could i use mini tupperware containers lined with perlite? or should i be grateful with the few seemingly perfect cakes and toss the grayish ones? I;m gonna get to some site searching now. thanks again!

You could try the tupperware containers..

Word of warning, though -- keep that and the healthy terrarium away from each other, because contams can spread on colonized cakes, causing them to be sickly and whatnot.

As for the food coloring I don't know (c:

(get some pics of the gray shit....)
