pinning problems
    #342988 -

a foaf birthed 12 pf cakes into a perlite terrarium 3 weeks ago. 2 of his cakes are pretty far advanced and are almost ready to have their crop harvested, but the other ten havent even begun to pin yet. they dont even appear to be making mycelium anymore. he notices that the shrooms on the 2 good cakes have stripes on the stem...a sign of high humidity? if so, what could be done to reduce humidity? the air is being exchanged with a fan 3 times a day so he doesnt think this is a problem. a flashlight gives the cakes light 8 hours a day. maybe the light isnt strong enough? any advice at all would be appreciated.

A flashlight isn't going to do the job unless it's one of those super-duper huge ones. Light is the most important factor in pinhead initiation, so don't deny your cakes the light they deserve. Prop a lamp above your grow chamber and up the amount of light your cakes get and see if that works. Just make sure the lamp doesn't create too much heat or it will dry out the cakes. All cakes should be exposed to the light when it is on.

Humidity probably isn't the problem, unless of course there isn't enough of it. Keep humidity over 90% at all times, and as close to 100% if at all possible (this is hard to do if you don't use a cool mist humidifier). Mist your cakes a little more if necessary. If none of this seems to help, with PF cakes the PF double ended casing tek works wonders: http://www.fanaticus.com/casing.htm Good luck!
