Cynicism

It seems to me alot of smarter older guys both here and in real life are rather cynical towards life and a lot of the posts here. Is this a result of them having seen and done it all and see it as youthful folly (for example the Alan Watts thread where quite a few younger blokes support him and the older don't), or is there something more to it and those outside of it see it as cynical/negative while those posting see it as common sense/bright?

Well OC was a bit cynical (or rational) in that Alan Watts thread. But I think that's because as he said he read all his books in the 70's and had been through it all before.

And to an outside observer the way you rationalise could be seen as cynical.

The point I'm trying to make is, is cynicism really cynical or is it rational thinking by those more wise which appears cynical to the outside observer?

It is the psychological conundrum of PS&P us young shits have to ponder the rest of our duration here.

i think that some of the long time posters here and even the mods can come off as cynical because they have argued their ideas so many times before that having to explain why they believe someone is wrong has become a chore, and so they make smart ass comments and sassy witticisms because going through it all again is frustrating.

Anyone who hangs out in a philosophy forum probably has strong opinions about something. Or they like to debate/argue/whathaveyou and part of that involves scrutinizing other posters.

It's easy to misinterpret the tone of the post, because there are no cues like vocal intonation for example.

And some people are just plain cynics.

Those people should get off the net and get a healthier hobby. I recommend yoga.

They should be discouraged from just hanging out and poisoning others with their shitty cynical attitudes. Scornful and jaded negativity has no place in productive debate.

Not at all. And I'm an old grasshopper, btw.

It doesn't take rustled feathers to be sick and tired of cynical assholes, trolls, flamers, or whatever you young grasshoppers call them nowadays. It just takes a desire to have an internet environment that encourages friendly, cynicism-free discourse for a change.

I have noticed on this forum and in life that people tend to get cynicism and realism confused , i guess it makes it even harder to distinguish between the two on a forum where one relies completely on words to relay a message.

We don't allow outside observers.  I'm a skeptic thank you.

Mostly my thinking is based on my rationalizations of perceived truth due to observation, study and experience.  Experience being a big one.  People constantly making claims they can't back up or don't understand is like having a bunch of gnats flying around you constantly.  Eventually you start swatting them.
