has anyone ever heard of someone being cured of hiv?
    #17522701 -

does anyone know of any treatments/ways to cure HIV? or has anyone personally witnessed or heard stories of a person once being HIV positive and then having the virus removed from them completely?

just curious. i believe that there probably is a way to cure it. i would bet money on it. i think anything is possible

This documentary has a poignant scene where an HIV positive person approaches a Tibetan master of Dzogchen who had his own blood disease go into remission. I thought the reaction of the master to his own improvement was interesting.

There is a way to cure HIV. It just has not been discovered yet. Medication was approved in 2012 that prevents HIV. This is a huge step. You will most likely see an HIV cure within 10-20 years, probably sooner.

Yes, three people may have been cured (blood virus levels undetectable, even after cessation of antiretroviral treatment in one case). See this article. The catch is you need a bone marrow transplant, which with current technology is more likely to kill you than HIV + antiretrovirals.

HAART has come a long way in the treatment of HIV.  It's not entirely curative (retro-viruses are pretty damn hard to get rid of).  But it's turned something that used to be deadly into something people can live with on much longer life expectancies.

unfortunately there is no cure for any viruses ONCE YOU GET THEM..only vaccines..theres a few miraculous cases of peoples own body defeating aids but of course is extremely rare..HIV is not a death sentence..my neigfhbor can attest to that as hes had AIDS since the 80s

There are quite a few anti-viral medications that can effectively erradicate viruses from the body.

It's the retro viruses which are alot more difficult to treat.

theres no cure for hepatitis, mono, chicken pox, herpes,HPV,or HIV..a few of those have vaccines but that's it..if you get a serious virus youre fucked..yes they have drugs to suppress symptoms and duplications but youll always carry it..no cures for viruses only preventive vaccines

The research on therapeutic vaccines look promising, but still research. There was that (German?) case involving bone marrow transplant that did cure, but a difficult road and not economically scalable.

I'm on Atripla and doing fine. It's daily anti-retrovirals for now. Maybe some day there will be a cure, but the virus likes to hide in all sorts of reservoirs. And it only takes one virus to re-populate the body.

No, there's actual anti-viral medications used to treat many strains of Herpes Simplex Virus.  The Aciclovir/Ganciclovir class is an example of this.  It's seen to have treated something like 60-75% of Herpes Virus cases of Bell's Palsy.

Acyclovir is a treatment, not a cure, unless you take it so soon that the virus doesn't have a chance to get into hiding. It interferes with viral replication, reducing outbreaks and contagion, but does nothing about inactive viruses hiding in nerve cells. Since inactive viruses can be reactivated randomly or when you're stressed, you have to keep taking acyclovir to prevent symptoms from coming back.

For some viruses that can't go dormant, though, antivirals can lead to a cure.

Don't viruses insert their genetics into your cells' DNA? It's been too long since my MolBiol course, I dunno.

TBH, I fucking love viruses, even though I harbour a deadly one. Clever molecular machinery, I'm in awe.

Viruses are made of RNA or DNA and use the cell's own machinery to make copies of themselves. But only retroviruses can get the cell to write themse into its DNA, and this isn't related to how e.g. HSV goes dormant.

Also: Apparently 8% of human DNA is retroviral in origin but has been passed down in inactive form for many generations. Creepy...

Right.  Yay for knowledge!  Science is power!

Yeah, true. Life feeds on itself, definitely creepy.
What's that enzyme... reverse transcriptase? It's the target of some anti-retrovirals.

Reminds me of how mitochondria and chlororplasts, both energy producing organelles in animals and plants... where parasitic invaders. Wow.

Getting OT though, sorry.

No cure yet, but you can live til at least 50 with it on antiretrovirals.
