She purchased a beverage to drink.  That beverage was unsafely hot.  She was found partially at fault for her injuries, and a proportional amount was deducted from her recovery....

The rest was paid by McDonalds because they were negligent and partially at fault for her injuries.

You're welcome to keep crying about it though.

I'm not crying.  But she was.  She purchased the same hot beverage that thousands and thousands of other people purchased but managed to handle successfully.

I had a friend many years back who was at a restaurant where the server slipped and poured hot coffee on her.  She got burned.  The coffee wasn't "insanely hot", it was just hot.  She did sue, and won, because the server was negligent in handling the hot beverage, NOT because the beverage was hot.  Assholes like this stupid bint who burnt herself, and her enabling fuck litigator fiends, are part and parcel of the decline of personal responsibility in this country.  Scummy lawyers who think every injury and sad story is somehow cause to make somebody else pay are a plague.

This case is different because the coffee was insanely hot.  You keep missing that point.  Had the product not been unsafe, she would have had no suit...she would have had a sore crotch for a few days and that would be that...

Similarly, Ford pintos used to sometimes explode when rear ended...Ford wasn't responsible for people getting rear ended, but they were for the extra injuries caused by explosions.

If you leave bare copper wire in a wall, and someone punches the wall and gets shocked...guess what?  You're getting sued...

People do stupid things all the time, but that doesn't immunize a company for making an unsafe product

There was nothing unsafe about the product.  Is a knife unsafe?  The Pinto was defective.  The coffee was not.  It was hot.  You are not supposed to apply hot coffee to your crotch area.  Similarly you are not supposed to stab yourself in the eye with a knife.

Yes, I know.  A jury found OJ not guilty too.  That is the problem.  A country full of cunts who don't know what personal responsibility is led there by shyster fuck litigators spreading the gospel that every injury is somebody else's fault and thus deserving of compensation.  This is part and parcel of the trend toward an electorate that increasingly votes for Obamaphones.

Dude, do you not understand how hard on them self they made this case? McDonald’s could have offered to pay the $10,000 instead of the $800, and dropped it at that. Then later it went up to over $100,000, still they could have paid it, but offered her like $8000. What they offered was always short of what she asked. They were stupid playing a game. Finally after not paying the jury awarded her claim then also awarded 2 days penalty of total corporate coffee sales, hence she got 2.7 million dollars. Big fucking whup. They make $500,000,000 a year JUST selling coffee? The poor fucking babies. She could have been disabled FOR LIFE

You always blame some bum for ruining the economy because he gets some shitty $1000 check every month for welfare. But when a company like AIG goes belly up and needs $80 billion, you don't think it effects anyone. You say it's a benefit to the tax payer. But let me ask you, even after it's paid back, what does the tax payer receive for money they lost in the time they were waiting for AIG to pay that money back? You wine about the consumer, well guess what, McDonalds is RICH BECAUSE OF the consumer. If they want to keep the sales rolling, they need a safer product, and they need to pay claims. It's that simple.

Otherwise I question their billion dollar enterprise and I question the premium quality of their restaurants and if they indeed do deserve the money in net revenues. You realize that if this was a health case, the government could have sued McDonald's for enough money to pretty much shut down like half the company right? It was a mosquito bite, they got cocky, they paid, in mosquito bite terms. The poor corporation.

OJ was found not guilty because of a lack of supporting evidence.

Know why Casey Anthony was found not guilty?

" New information

In November 2012, WKMG-TV television in Orlando reported that police never investigated Firefox browser evidence on Casey Anthony's computer the day of Caylee's death; they only looked at Internet Explorer evidence. The browser history showed that someone at the Anthony household used Firefox to do a Google search for "fool-proof suffication" [sic] and then clicked on an article about committing suicide by taking poison and putting a plastic bag over one's head. The browser then recorded activity on MySpace, a site used by Casey Anthony but not George Anthony. The station learned about this information from Casey Anthony's attorney Jose Baez who mentioned it in his book on the case, speculating that George had contemplated suicide after Caylee's death. He conceded to reporters that the records are open to interpretation.[193]"

The forensic team apparently had a bunch of computer geniuses working on the info, but didn't bother to check browser cookies, the first thing on the hard drive most people would have looked up. The investigative team was apparently so smart they didn't bother to do a very sufficient investigation before they started the trial and were already seeking the death penalty. They sued her without enough evidence and she got away with it. It's that simple.

Btw OJ was found not guilty in criminal trial, but in civil trial he paid millions. This seem unfair to you? Perhaps capitalism is not the government you claim to praise so much. Maybe a different government would suffice? You do understand how the law works right? Without passion or prejudice. Maybe a socialistic legal system would appeal to you better.

OJ was found not guilty because the jurors were fucking idiots.  How much do you think he actually paid, anyway?  (Hint it aint shit).  There was lots of supporting evidence in the criminal trial.  That's why he lost the civil trial.  He got a wonderfully pliant jury that his million dollar team of shysters managed to manipulate.

It was an incredibly weak case..so much so that the prosecutor begged her boss to let her make a good offer so she didn't have to try it.

The reason he was found liable in the civil case is that he had no fifth amendment privilege and a lower standard of proof

Sounds like a post disaster ass cover.  She got her ass handed to her by extremely high priced shysters like the DNA "expert" impeacher.  The the stupid fucks never realized that leather shrinks like a bastard when it gets wet, either.  But that still doesn't excuse the idiocy of the jury.  Or maybe the prejudice of the jury.  It was no accident that the defense got to pack it with female Negroes.

Maybe you didn't watch all of the trial, or perhaps you watched a different one than I did, but there was very little evidence pointing toward OJ, and a lot of unanswered questions that didn't really make much sense.  The prosecution hung their hat on the theory that OJ, acting alone, killed them, cleaned up, and got on a plane...it was a piss poor theory then, and the jury didn't buy it.

Any other verdict would have been the act of an incompetent jury.  The jury did the right thing in the criminal case.  If the state can't prove the case, the verdict has to be not guilty.

As far as how much money he paid, it has probably been very little. I don't know that it makes much difference in the long run, however, since no amount will give the families their loved ones back, and he's gonna die in prison anyway.

Auto-Summary
A woman sued McDonald's for $800 after spilling hot coffee on herself, and after initially offering only $800, McDonald's offered $2.7 million in a penalty. The woman received over $2.7 million due to the company's negligence in serving the coffee. The author criticizes this as an example of personal responsibility and excessive litigation, arguing that companies should be held accountable for their products' safety.

$20,000,000,000 return huh? Wow you are good at math  $20,000,000,000 thrown into a Ponzi spending loop Obama helps create where he spends over 1 trillion a year extra equals........... wait for it.......... wait for it............. wait for it.....................

NOT A SINGLE FUCKING PENNY BACK TO ANY DAMN TAX PAYER!!

For a minute, you thought I was going to fall for that one huh? I'm supposed to be getting as a citizen a nice little tax return on the $20 billion, I almost given a free million. I was pretty happy, oh wait that's not real.

Do you think a person who falls into a pot hole and didn't actually purchase a product in a parking lot and somehow falls and cracks his spine and can barely walk again should be scolded "you shouldn't have fallen dude", is it fair the company won't pay a claim of his surgery? His life is over, job, medical, it's at the whim of his credit. Why couldn't they fix the parking lot? Where is Obama care to come in and pay for it? Oh wait you disagree with Obama care AND paying claims? Ok so the guy is screwed.

Do you think coffee should be served so hot that a person spills it on them self and has 3rd degree burns and needs $10,000 of surgery and skin graphs? Wow, I've spilled hot water and shit on myself like a dozen times, never sued, but also never needed thousands of dollars worth of surgery. Shucks, maybe I didn't realize I needed the skin graph because I am too dim to realize how hurt I was. Last I heard, falling off a ladder doesn't guarantee you are going to break 15 bones just falling off the first step of the ladder, and need $10,000 in hospital bills. Last I heard if I cut myself with a knife, and aren't deliberately juggling the knives or aiming towards a vein, I can just put a band aid on the cut, or at most need stitches but probably that won't cost $10,000.

Was this lady doing some arduous task? Was she doing back flips with the coffee? Was she riding a bicycle? Was she even driving? Would it have been too hard to pay the $10,000 claim? Instead of $2.7 million? What's the hardest part? Here is the hardest part, for you to realize. Ok dude, since you know how the law works, understand this, and understand it well. If someone sues you, AND YOU OFFER A SINGLE DOLLAR TO THE PERSON you automatically admit you are wrong. If they wanted to pay her claim, $10,000 should have EASILY sufficed. Why offer to pay a claim and short change it? Most of these companies spend hundreds of thousands a year hiring defence law firms, they pay them to avoid paying claims. So why did they offer $800? To avoid paying a large amount? Real bright, they pay these fucking law firms to keep them out of trouble, then offer an amount not suffice to suddenly show liability, what a great way to spend millions of years hiring shitty defence law firms.

Is it getting through your head yet? $2.7 million was a penalty of TWO days of the companies total revenue in coffee sales. The damn company makes $500,000,000 a year in coffee sales alone. You think she should have to cough up all the money for shitty skin graphs over a coffee cup, as though she was making it up? "Oh the poor corporation :crybaby: wahh, poor people all collect welfare they deserve their poor status"

It's what you sound like. Hey, not all people who are poor and make under $11 an hour, collect welfare, some do have kids, pay their insurance, spend every penny they have on their life and family, work 65 hours a week, and have shitty lives on shitty pay. I know you don't care, you think assuming company responsibility and taking care of an over head suddenly means employees are expendable and aren't worth the complaint. But not every company has a HUGE over head and I don't think a person on the bottom end of society deserves to be treated like a joke and be offered an $800 claim over a cup of coffee that resulted in $10,000 of skin graphs and shit, when if the company offers to pay a claim, it shows they are liable in the first place.

Sorry, this is a persons life, if they don't get surgery, a skin infection could occur killing them eventually or disabling them and preventing them from walking and being able to maintain a job and a living. It was a fucking mosquito bite in the long run for the company to pay. The owner of McDonald’s is still flying private jets and driving yachts and buying huge three story mansions with extra select gold Calcutta marble double stair cases and travertine stone around the pool, mean while a lady got compensated. That was a damn hot cup of coffee. I've spilled boiling water on myself before, and while the pain and burn wasn't minimal, and the amount spilled may have been a tiny splash or two, I didn't need $10,000 of skin graphs. I'll repeat myself, that was a damn hot cup of coffee. Do you not like the way the law works in a capitalist society as a Republic role modelled after democracy? If not perhaps you should try a socialist government, they aren't as big on claims.

I thought you liked democracy, you bitch about who pisses on it sure enough all day.

Maybe if there was proof the jury was paid off to give an innocent verdict, he could have been re tried. He was obviously stupid, and is now doing like 20 years or some shit for some other crime. Karma is a bitch. Sorry a private investigation wasn't held that looked at the jury’s pensions and observed how much they were paid as jurors and how much they made in their day jobs and pooled it all together to see if they had some extra hand out. Perhaps there was more to it. I don't know. Manipulating a court room by a slick over paid lawyer Johnny Cochran or whoever into giving a guilty man a sentence as innocent is a sign of corruption, not a reflection of capitalism. This was a serious claim, or murder, it wasn't as simple as a person badly injured at work. Nicole was dead and someone else also, this guy stabbed the shit out of them to death.

You are confusing a trial that shows a companies liability over an injury and how much someone should be paid, with a person on trial for murder, taking a persons life, and never giving it back to them. One is over an already decided liability but the question of how much is owed, the other is a question of whether a person committed a brutal crime by an over paid athlete who was in some funny movies as well

I watched quite a bit of it.  Live even.  I would have been satisfied to vote to convict.  I thought Scheck was full of shit about the DNA and the endless challenges to the chain of evidence nonsense.  Then there was the fucking glove.  I was watching that fiasco and thinking, "What the fuck aren't any of these prosecutors going to get an expert to testify about how much leather shrinks when it gets saturated in blood?"

He was guilty as shit. It was obvious. Who else would have done it? Who else had a motive? He apparently found them dead, then got in a car and cruised down the high way headed out of the state apparently, in disgust of the murder and shock and incomprehension of what happened. But the fact is, aside from that, there was little evidence. No blood on clothes, shoes, at none that were proven to be his. He cleaned up real nice. What's a bloody glove when he should have had shoes with blood all over the bottom leading to the prints from him walking away, bloody clothes, etc. Any evidence obtained was said by him "I observed the crime scene then left", so now, think about it, if that's inadmissible, then what is admissible. Take into account when the OJ trial started I was in the 3rd grade. I remember it vaguely, but looking back realize he was smart enough to ditch lot's of evidence.

The whole court was filled with idiots I'll give you that. The legal system is filled with many idiots, especially the ones deciding what is "admissible" evidence. Which are pretty much the supreme justice and ones who set the laws. Often times cops fuck up getting evidence on time or finding it to submit, etc. Casey Anthony was let go because the prosecutor basically tried her too hard and quickly without proper due and without the evidence submitted properly. Later they found out she googled "how to suffocate someone", amazingly she was too stupid to already know how to it.

This trial was similar to a person getting a house searched without a warrant, and the evidence turning out to be un submittable.
