Humility
    #17528080 -

Something I've been missing!

"The spiritual teacher Meher Baba held that humility is one of the foundations of devotional life: "Upon the altar of humility we must offer our prayers to God."[11] Baba also described the power of humility to overcome hostility: "True humility is strength, not weakness. It disarms antagonism and ultimately conquers it."[12] Finally, Baba emphasized the importance of being humble when serving others: "One of the most difficult things to learn is to render service without bossing, without making a fuss about it and without any consciousness of high and low. In the world of spirituality, humility counts at least as much as utility."[13]"

Seems a lot of power is lost to the individual who is arrogant, a lot of energy is wasted. Is arrogance a spinning of the wheels? You use a lot of energy and get nowhere.

I've become arrogant as a simple way to suppress fear and express anger. I am not arrogant to ordinary people, but for example on mushrooms at an old acquaintance's house, I was hilariously arrogant for hours, they were worried I was going to "kill them for sport" and when some moron Christian, cultured idiots try to push their method of mediocrity on me I unleash the most antagonistic attitude. I plan to continue to treat these people this way, it seems to help and empower me. It also quickly erodes any cultural values, empowering me once again.

But with the disease of the culture out of my system and the damage healing, I feel it's time to disassemble this arrogant, righteous, spiteful and authority-targeting mindset.

Because I think what arrogance can do slowly and grudgingly, humility can do far more powerfully and quickly. Agree?

And tomorrow you'll be spouting the opposite.

Humility is not something you decide on imo.  It comes from a deep empathy with yourself and everything else.  You either got it or you don't.  Pretenders don't last.

i think you are missing a major point. humility because it's more powerful?, is this still not arrogance?. humility shouldn't be about gaining anything, it should be about giving everything. if someone is humble strictly because he wants some kind of personal gain, then i think this attitude is far from being humble, and is actually quite the opposite of humility. no?

icelander has it right.

I have mixed feelings about humility.

For one, I can't say for sure that I've ever met a person who didn't think that they were the most important one on Earth.

On the other hand, it's obvious to me that arrogant people suffer terribly and never seem to figure it out. They do not appear to realise the futility of their actions - that arrogance can never win as long as you are mortal.

So much energy wasted, and so much opposition created for no apparent gain.

I'm exploring a theory that arrogance is just a deep-seated sadomachochism.

The sad truth is that all the arrogant people I have met are very insecure. The arrogance appears to be a bluff persona that has been created out of fear. Some do it more convincingly than others, but they don't seem happy to me.

I've found that humility usually comes through suffering. Don't start whipping yourself tho. :nono:

As far as I'm aware no one can try to be humble, as trying is just another self-serving ego game.

Humility sucks, Goodwill is better.

Thats me at least, I don't like the egotistical connotations of the word 'humility'.

Do you think there is a relationship between good will and humility?

Indeed, it is a contradiction to want humility for power, and is nauseating like passive-aggressivism.

What I'm starting to hint at is a natural system of behaving, that re-ignites the will to power and the want for dominance of your organism, yet retains the conclusion I've come to that love is the only way. That is, I think we can spread love and good will, but if you follow love endlessly, you become more capable of love, more powerful... I think personal empowerment is a form of enabling oneself to serve the natural will of love and creation... I think personal empowerment, not ego empowerment, is a necessary step for moving oneself into higher vistas of experience.

Yes, I think good-will is essencially the definition of humility but theres more to the word than that - at least in the broad way it is used.

Most of the connotations of the word humility I disagree with and find somewhat nauseating, I'm not a meek person and have no desire to be so but I have goodwill for others and go out of my way to help where I can.

Humility as I understand it is a combination of meekness and goodwill with a common connotation of subjective idealism, a perfect combination to keep the masses subjugated but not much good for the individual.

Goodwill + knowing that Pink Floyd is better than Justin Bieber objectively + balls. I prefer that combination

Humility is a huge part of wisdom IMO. Life is the great teacher there. Anyone who is paying attention will be taught humility sooner or later. I don't think one can really seek it, but also I think one can't help but find it sooner or later if they want it. Often even if they don't. I think many who have never experienced humility do so on their death bed where it can no longer serve them. Unless you believe in the whole reincarnation thing, but that's a whole other can o worms.

the concept is fucked, something good stuck in the middle of egoistic baloney.

Self important and ignorant behavior is a drag, but there is not an opposite exactly - no humility to replace it with.

you do need good habits, but fake humility is worse than no humility.

and bringing god into it is a big zero - we have to be focused on real issues.

I believe that humility is what comes from being secure in yourself and showing goodwill towards all.

Arrogance is a bit trickier to nail down.  There are a few subject areas in which I have a great deal of experience and (varying degrees of) formal education.  In other words, areas in which I am very confident that I know my shit.

When I am in the midst of a group of people who do not have similar (or superior) background, and yet insist on pontificating on the subject, my natural inclination is to gently correct misinformation being spouted, but I can get arrogant quickly enough when the uninformed continue to spew ignorant nonsense.  I do not suffer fools gladly or easily.

It's a character flaw and one I've been aware of for a long time.  I've also been working on it for a long time, not because I give a toss what those folks think, but because I don't like that character flaw in others, and I don't like having character flaws in myself.

This whole post is the simple truth, but it sure as hell reads like arrogance to me.

Oh well, Life is brutish short and fraught with bitter disappointment, so I guess I'll just have to suck it up and deal with it.

Works for me...

part of being humble is being honest with yourself, and knowing and being able to admit your flaws and mistakes.

It is not the act of allowing everyone to be who they are that defines humility it's the lack of the desire to infringe upon the liberty of others to begin with. In lieu of that humility would be accepting ones own treatment of ones self and others in a somewhat compassionate way. I've heard people call themselves assholes on many occasions. "Ahh, I'm just an asshole anyway". It could be a therapeutic expression rather than simply being a self-serving delusion.

I think it is true that it most often takes hardship to be humble. Why be humble is there is no hardship? If life was easy I'd still be the fool I was at 17 rather than the fool I am now.
