Whole white rice and oatmeal substrate experiment
    #17401834 -

I rinsed the white rice pretty well and then put it in a small pan and brought it to a boil. Once it looked pretty soft I took it off the heat, strained and rinsed it. I then rinsed some oatmeal and put it in the pan and cooked it. Once it was done i rinsed it really well. It is obviously very gunky and sticky so I had to rinse it really well and use a spoon and a strainer to try to loosen it up a bit. I mixed the rice and oatmeal with some vermiculite, I just eyeballed it, and put it in the jar. I used about two and a quarter cc's of pink buffalo strain to inoculate it. I thought the extra would help it colonize. I'll post more pics as the grow progresses. (Also I have used the tall half pint jars before and I have never had a major problem with them. I used it because my short half pints are currently being used on another project

The oatmeal might make up for some of what's missing from the white rice.  Mycelium really wants the outer hull which has been removed from your white rice.  Even better is rice bran.

I got my spores a few days before I got my supplies so I grabbed what was in the cabinet. Do you know much about using kamut instead of rye? Its larger and looks like it would work well, of course looks can be deceiving.

just about any whole grain or whole grain flour works.

Often, the problem whole grains is getting moisture and texture right.

I have a few jars of PESA going now and they are super fast colonizers. I inoculated them 2 days ago and 2 out of 3 already have growth. I also have Texas, F+, Cambodia, and Pink Buffalo jars that I knocked up that same day and none of them are showing yet.
This is the PESA jar.

The growth has slowed quite a bit recently. We'll see soon if this is going to work.

how close to colonized?

might be running into wet spots in your mix that the mycelium won't colonize, might also benefits from a round of breaking up & shaking the jars to get things mixed up

DO NOT SHAKE THOSE FUCKING JARS!

That layer of vermiculite on top, is a protective contam barrier. If you shake them. you risk spreading contams through you cakes.

I only started one with oatmeal and white rice. It's the tall half pint pictured above. It's hard to see the myc well because the jar has a pattern on it. It's almost half way colonized. I plan on dunking and rolling it.
I have 12 short half pints that are BRF done by the book though and I was wondering if you guys have any opinions on spawning brf. I have H.poo, Verm, coffee and some straw to use as a substrate. I have 12 quart jars of rye going as well but it's been over a week and I haven't seen even a single spot of myc.  I'm about 95% sure I got bad syringes. I got them from a co-worker that may have tampered with them. He also got them from a bad vendor. (Not a sponsor) I'm going to give them 7 more days and if I don't get any growth I'm starting over with spores from one of our fine sponsors.

WOW, you my friend are a regular mad scientist
I LOVE IT keep it up
I did some F+ and on the 3rd day i thought i seen something but the fourth confirmed my thoughts, and after that they just took off really fast, they are almost 100% colonized maybe a day to go which would mean it took only 2 weeks, and it was MS. How do you plan on doing your F+?

Experimentation: How tek advances

I had considered this, but at my experience level I wanna work through all the known good teks and run into all the problems I can before I start breaking things in unknown ways.

I have some f+ that are almost done colonizing. I did them following the PF Tek. Short wide mouthed half pints with a Verm+BRF+water sub. They've done really well. I can't wait to see them beautiful fruits.
