Well... if you just follow the PF Tek (www.fanaticus.com), you shouldn't be spending THAT much cash... and the more creative you can get, the cheaper the total cost gets... let's add it all up... these prices are off the top of my head and may be a little off:

a dozen 1/2 pint canning jars - $8
a bag of vermiculite - $5
a bag of perlite - $5
a bag of brown rice - $5
a spore syringe - $10
a cheap styrofoam cooler - $0 (I'm assuming you can find this or at least something similar around your place, be creative)
some distilled water - $3

So far we're at about $35... this is a bare-bones setup, but it will probably be okay. You could try to sterilize your jars with boiling water if you don't want to get a pressure cooker. But in my opinion, a pressure cooker is probably the best $25 you'll ever spend (check out e-bay, I found a new one for twenty bucks!).

Anyway... if you want my sincere advice, though, I'd say do a little more research, get a little more patience, and a little more motivation and you should be in for a killer crop.
