Psilocybe strictipes in Oregon?

Hi Guys, long time lurker here. We went out looking for some lib caps north of Portland and came back with these:



We suspect that they are Psilocybe strictipes.

Their skin peals off and the stem is stick-like and breaks easily. They were growing in grass NOT on dung.

What do you guys think? Anyone had any of these lately? We found a bunch!

And most importantly, are there any poisonous lookalikes? It seems like the lookalikes are all other psilosybe mushrooms anyway so I should just munch a few and see how potent they are.

I have not collected P. strictipes in oregon, but have collected what are supposed to be them in Washington several times. They are outwardly nearly indistinguishable from P. semilanceata. The key distinction on a macroscopic basis is that the stipes are not pliant as in semilanceata, but will snap readily.

I recommend you learn what you can about semilanceata, target them and then look for strictipes. They occur in the same places, and are perhaps 1/10th as common. Mostly I suspect they go ignored as just another liberty cap.

Wow there's a lot of Mycena mushrooms, even just in oregon and it seems really tricky to distinguish them. I guess it's note likely that they're cyanorrhiza since they look a bit browner and don't have very blue stems.

The stems do "snap", especially when they were freshly picked...

Anyway, not psychedelic then? Are any Mycena species poisonous or can I try to eat one :smile:

No; not phychedellic. There are toxic Mycenas, containing muscarine and potentially other toxins, there are known safe species and then there are the vast majority which are of unknown edibility and dubious taxonomic status.

Speaking of Psilocybes in the section semilanceatae, I have long suspected that it is one of these Mycenoid species in the winter-dead grass layer that causes that garlic smell so pervasive while hunting liberty caps, and in new leaf litter which always makes me feel like autumn.

Wow thanks for all the great info. a bit bummed of course that these aren't active but oh well it was a fun hunting trip!

Anyone know if these Mycenas are more of a late-fall winter thing? I know that the Semilanceatas we were looking for are supposed to be a fall thing but the rainy season delayed this year for a while so we thought we might be in luck. The area we were picking basically ONLY had these guys. I wonder if it's a seasonal thing.

Anyone had any luck hunting semilanceata in oregon lately? or is it too late?
