Lucky and unexpected find: Aquarium Terrarium *Suggestions*
    #17361544 -

EDIT (12/16/12) <<<<: Instead of making a new thread I'll just edit my original post. I now have all my inoculation supplies ready. I'm making the PF Tek with golden teachers.

1) http://www.shroomery.org/8409/PF-Tek ;
Is this guide up-to-date and accurate?

2) How long do I have to wait to safely inoculate my cakes after sterilizing them in a pot?

3) Can I put my inoculated jars in a box, or do I have to have them in an environment where there is airflow? Would a closet work?

4) I'm using 8 oz (1/2 pint) ziplock plastic containers instead of jars. What are the exact measurements of BRF, Verm, and water that I should use? I rather not do the math and then fuck up because I didn't account for the dry verm layer or something equally stupid.

5) My spore syringe came without the needle attached. I assume this is standard. What is the best way to avoid contamination when screwing on the needle? What is the correct procedure? Just do it in a glovebox then flame it?

>>>>: EDIT CLOSE

So I was looking around my house for suitable single-pf tek fruiting chambers. I was happy to stumble upon my old plastic aquarium from when I was 10. I saw it and knew my search was over.

Here it is fully assembled yo. The whole thing is plastic.

When you lift up the cover thing you can see an internal plastic lid. On the actual lid, you can see a light.

Internal plastic lid holmes.

Light fixture. I would like to know if this is a suitable light...

Bam, light in action. I think it will work just fine, but again I'm come for advice. It's just your standard incandescent aquarium light.

It's pretty bright when it doesn't filter through that internal lid.

The base elevates the actual aquarium about 2 inches off the table surface. I think if I drill holes through the black base that are about 1/2 in diameter, I bet I can get a significant amount of airflow to then go up into the actual fruiting chamber, but I don't know for sure.

Alternately I can flip the base and have it cover the bottom 2 inches of the soon-to-be fruiting chamber. I know some people cover their perlite.

Shit came with an air pump! I do not know the air-moving capacity of it, but I am sure it is strong enough to give enough FAE for this small grow. If I go shotgun style, could I put the pump in and feel confident that my grow will have enough FAE for 72 hours away from home? That would be awesome

If I choose to go the PMP route, I can tube through the base. I thought that was rather convenient.

I'm thinking I could put it here...

Note: This is my basement. It is finished, but it has been suggested not to place a fruiting chamber in a basement. I'm not sure if the fact that it is finished changes the case, but I want to put it there. I'm under the impression that colonized PF Teks are pretty contam resistant anyway....

When I have people over, would this be a fin place to put it for 24-48 hours? It will only be one cake but I don't know how fast Cubes eat up oxygen. I could fan it occasionally when no one is looking

It has a lid so it's pretty discreet.

An alternative spot I could put it is where option A is located on this thread >>>> http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17346344

So what route should I take? It has a 2 gallon capacity, and I will only be putting 1 cake in it. Should I turn it into a shotgun and just drill holes e v e r y w h e r e, or should I go the pmp route? I do have an air-pump after all.

I think maybe a hybrid is in order? Suggestions please haha

And anyone have an extra cube syringe lying around that they don't mind parting with? I'm pretty cheap... Jewish rep

I'll buy from thehawkseye if I have to though... he sounds good

Thanks all

i think if you know what you are doing you can get that to work

i think if this is your first time growing mushrooms you should do it per the tek.

lol yeah Obama is quite the hypocrite.

Since no one is answering this I will just ask 2 simple questions:

What should I make this aquarium into? Shotgun, PmP, or hybrid?

Will the air-pump give effective FAE if I leave for 48 hours?

I don't want to drill a bunch of holes in this thing for it not to work...

either way will need holes

a fish tank air pump isnt going give enough air.

it can certainly work, if you supplement it with a few holes.

should I just go with drilling 1/4 inch holes every 2 inches? I mean if I fuck up and there is too much of a humidity loss I'm pretty sure I can just tape up some holes

Looks legit nuff, I'm sure a few tweak here and there would help out. But the basics are covered as far as this nub sees

What are you gonna put in there? 1-3 cakes maybe?

It's small enough a pump may give enough fresh air. Make sure you got good flow out of the thing too.

Be forewarned, aquariums and pumps are notorious for sucking in this hobby. On the surface, they seem great, but they are not.

Look into the soda bottle tek for such small scale. Or build a proper SGFC.

Spitball: Yeah I plan on putting one cake in there. Maybe 2 can fit, but I don't want to push it. I figure an aquarium this size (2 gallons) is just a big soda bottle tek. I will be doing a soda bottle tek in my basement for comparison. Hopefully between the 2 I'll yield a quarter per flush. That would make me very happy. I'm not trying to sell, or share with people because I don't want to land in jail. People aren't quiet, so the best way to keep this secret is for only one person to know (me).

edit: I'm also trying Cup O' Shrooms, suggestion by Citric. Apparently I can expect an eighth out of that too. Kind of rad

anyway I'm hoping this will work virtually the same as a soda bottle. That small pump I could put on if my air flow really suffers, but I found a pretty nice spot on top of my dresser behind a globe that seems like it will be perfect.

I don't understand why anyone would want to bulk grow unless they intend to sell. What is anyone going to do with that many shrooms...

Make that into a PMP ... bottom with hydroton and air wand/stone ... etc.  do a little container with bulk substrate in there to maximize what it will do.

Make that thing you've got into a PMP 'show piece'!

Later, do a proper SGFC out of a bigger tub.

good luck.

The techniques discussed on these forums are useful for many species of mushroom, legal or otherwise. Commercial wannabes, like myself, would like to make some money

It's easier to just grow a shitload at once, dry them, and throw them in the freezer than to constantly grow a few.

I would not recommend a drill to make the holes. Hold the appropriate bit/nail/whatever to a flame and you'll be able to easily push it through with no fuss. Well, maybe. Torque from a drill might crack the plastic.

Use a drill, melting plastic creates harmful fumes, use a drill with a block of wood on the other side of the plastic so it doesn't crack, and the holes will be perfect. Not to mention it will be faster with the drill, that's a shit load of holes to melt.

If you are worried about making too many holes, use a marker and a ruler and mark every 2" with dots, in a grid pattern, then drill out the pattern.

...and if you run the drill backwards, you reduce the chance of cracking.

cracking often occurs when the bit catches at high speed. even a sharp bit catches if you hand ain't steady.

unless you are using a forstner bit, you're gonna crack the plastic, unless you are a fucking pro at using a drill.

If you place a block of wood on the other side of the plastic and drill slowly, with steady constant pressure, it shouldn't crack.

But even without the block of wood or a "forstner bit", the tub shouldnt crack...RR uses a regular bit in his video.

http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Terrarium-Tek

Making sure the tub is in a warm environment rather than a colder one will help as well, because when the plastic is warmer it's not as brittle.
