1. i'd still end case with verm. since it seems to help trigger pins.

2. no need for peroxide. sterile water is perfect.

3. play it by ear. over-watering is worse than under.

4. at birth.

Lets see,
as for using the straw tek insted of casing, i dont know. I dontt think that a cake should be cased.
Use regular water, no h2o2 is needed, its a waste of money.
fill the straws when there empty
i wait a few days after i birth the cakes, make sure the cake is colonized, also let the mycelium form a seal around the straw for afew days before you start filling it up.
the cakes tend to drink alot of water during the first flush, a whole straw full a day.
Heres anohter trick for you guys, and yes it works. After the cake is fully colonized, let in set in a bowl of water for a few days, it sucks it up like a sponge .

Mycelium5150:

You wrote "After the cake is fully colonized, let in set in a bowl of water for a few days, it sucks it up like a sponge."

My question is, how deep should the water come up on the sides of the cake?

thanks
c

I thought that if water came in direct contact with the cake, the mycelum would be damaged? Is this true? Also you said this works, what advantages have you seen when using this??

I'm seriously interested to hear these questions answered as I think of more! I've been looking at that "7 cakes pic" for years now and drooling  (It seems to have been around since like 92? Is that about right MR.5150?)

Does "refuling" your cakes make your post 2nd and 3rd flushes less potent in anyway? Or does the water replentish the psilocybin in later fruits???

adding water does not lower potency.
instead of a straw, you might just use an icepick to create a tunnel which you fill with water a needed.

this idea came from shiitake farmers, they soak the logs for a couple days to get the second flush going.just let the cake float around in the water, a ice pick wouldnt make a big enough hole. the cakes drink a straw full of water a day. i notice that pf cakes love to be wet. they love teh water drops on teh top of the cakes. They suck this water up when there heavily fruiting.
Sorry but i am done answering these straw tek questions. its really basic, try it out and don tthin that i got flush like the pic the very first time i grew, it took awhile to master it,
good luck

the icepick tek i used was 4 holes around the rim.
prolly smaller diameter than a straw but not much.
the advantage is twofold.
the water is spread out better into the cake.
no need to let mycellia seal around the straw and nothing sticking up to be bumped, etc.
