The Terence McKenna Thread

Terence McKenna has taught me so much about life, no teachers have ever come close to the knowledge I've gained from his books and lectures. His ideas are revolutionary in every sense, although some are a little on the bizarre side, his ideas about culture, mushrooms, and other miscellaneous ideas are very admirable in my opinion.

Terence rarely tripped after 1988/89 due to a bad trip; never again on mushrooms. His tumor was in the shape of a mushroom...

I don't think that Terence was a fraud.

He did make a big mistake not telling people the truth however.

I know you'll disagree, but I found him incredibly pretentious and pseudo intellectual. I really don't like him. Full of himself, not really all that intelligent, but would like to think he was. :shrug:

Apparently Dennis says that the rumor that Terrence didn't trip much after that bad trip is bollocks. He's going to elaborate on it in his new book. I listened to the podcast but I fell asleep during it. I'm going to need to give it a listen when I'm not really tired.

Well the controversy is that even after he had that bad trip, he was still "Rx-ing" (recommending) the same thing that fucked him up so much that he never did them again. Although, apparently that is not true. I'm excited for Dennis' book.

I'm a huge McKenna fan though. Definitely check out the Psychedelic Salon. Probably over 200 hours of McKenna talks on there. I like listening to him much more than I like reading him.

Oh, I see. But I'm sure he knew that mushrooms can be a tool for improving yourself. Regardless of his own experience. But I'm going to read Dennis' book, it sounds really interesting from what I've seen.

My ex-girlfriend interviewed him a couple of months ago. I have a copy of it on my computer right now but I haven't got around to it yet. I'll have to give it a listen to see if there's anything good on it. It's a hour and a half and I haven't set aside the time yet.

I really enjoy listening to Terence, his voice is very comforting to me. I love the way he uses the English language to tell a story or explain an idea, making up words and dropping strange theories. It's like brain candy. But he did repeatedly instruct others to do that which he was afraid of, to do a thing that could have profound influence on one's sanity. SO that's a little messed up, considering it was his platform.
Ultimately I love the guy and hold no ill will towards him or his 'teachings'. I will continue to listen to him and suggest others do the same, but always with a grain of salt and a sense of humor.
Psychedelic Salon is a great resource.
