They are also very against illegal intoxicants so you need to lie about that, btw. If you want to join you'll have to ask a master mason, and not me, lol. If my lodge ever read my posts on this site I'd probably be kicked out for unmasonic conduct.

Can you tell me more bout this?  Why are they so against it? And are you sure that's not just the "official policy?"

They are law abiding patriotic old men. They still say the pledge of allegiance before every meeting. When I joined and had my interview some of the questions I was asked were if I had ever used illegal intoxicants, if I'd ever been arrested (if you have a felony you can never join), if I ever advocated the overthrow of the government, what church I was a member of, why I wanted to join, etcetera. They screen their members and are picky. It's not like they're picky about what you do for a living (I mean we have both snow plow drivers and city councilmen in lodge) but they want members square society considers good type people. This is all under the Grand Lodge of Ohio, btw. It's very similar in all masonic jurisdictions I'm aware of.

So did you lie about past drug use?  What if you told them you had done stuff in the past, but were presently sober? How would they view that?

I appreciate you pointing me back to that page. I did review it, but I don't think it entirely answers the questions I asked.

In my lodge we have a member that is a recovered alcoholic addict. As long as you're not a felon and it was a long long time ago it's not a deal breaker. But that also depends on the lodge and they guys on the investigative committee's recommendation. Every lodge is different. If you have a record there's no point in lieing about it because there's usually a member who's a police officer and they'll run your name and stuff. They say they don't do that anymore, but we really do. As long as you don't have a record you might as well lie about it, it'll be easier for you that way and you won't have to answer any uncomfortable questions about it.

Im a master mason, and hold the office of Inner guard, It seems alot of people find freemasonry dull.  I do not.  I have been a shroomerite for over 11 years,  and I stopped doing illicit substances before becomming a mason.  I think the magic of masonry requires the sacrifice of actually ACTUALLY being true to your obligations.  I used to wonder what the big secret in freemasonry was before I was a mason, ponder it, immagine it, suspect it..... now that I am one I realize,  Masons arent the ones who live with a secret.  its society in general who operate under a lot of little ones.
The secrets we learn come from living life on the level.  Immagine that.  never having to conceal yourself because you truly have nothing to hide from anyone.  It can take alot to get there, much may need to be reveiled and forgiven.  But if you go into it expecting the wisdom of masonic secrets,  while secretly living against it's principles.  I assure you, you will tire of the repetitiveness eventually.  But there is more and more light beyond those 3 degrees, and only the zealous and true will know it.  these are not mere words,  but in the end, if you arent the one to walk that path,  then only words they will remain.  You must have faith, that God (whatever you determine that to mean)  will punish vice and reward virtue,  and on you progress faithfully past the doors, faithfully through the degrees, faithfully in kinship, and with a desire for honor and virtue, not rank or fortune.
You become what you believe in.  Believe in greatness.  And that it is something worth sacrificing a few vices to get.

That is all very true. There is always more light in masonry. It's very little of that light in lodge in my experience. The lectures, which I know mostly of by heart, so I just sit there bored. It's the political stuff and always support your country and military that gets under my skin. For a group that started out overthrowing tyrants they have sure done a 180 on that. It's a good group of guys, for sure, I just have little in common with them politically. And it's the political stuff which turns me off more than anything else. I was thinking about petitioning the Shine. They dropped the requirement to be scottish rite before you can join. They seem like they would be a funner crowd, I mean, they even have a bar and putting on a circus seems like fun to me too.

Good for you. Pursue this as long as you are willing and able.
I am no longer an active mason.
I used to be very involved, lodge master twice, scottish rite, york rite, 32 deg. After rank and fortune came honour and virtue. It was an immense source of pleasure and growth and friendship for quite a number of years. Now, I am at peace spiritually so I no longer have an interest in the ritual.
