When you birth (take the cake outta the jar) you dunk the cake in tap water for 24 hours.
Then after that, you gently roll it in dry fine verm.
Then place in your fruiting chamber.

After your cakes have completely colonized, and have been allowed a week to consolidate after the 100% colonization mark is met.

You birth them from the jars, soak them in water, for 24 hours. This is known as the dunk.

After the dunk, you roll them in DRY vermiculite, let them set in your terrarium/fruiting chamber for 30minutes (this allows the verm to stick) then mist the cakes until the vermiculite is evenly wet.

you soak the cake for 24  hours;;; thats the dunk part.  plain old tap water is fine.

then you roll the cake in STERILIZED or at least PASTURIZED vermiculite. top bottom sides;;; thats the roll part  sterilized is preferable and people will tell you it doesn't matter which is true until you get some verm that has been exposed to the spores of an opportunistic fungus like penecillium or trich;  then your really sorry you didnt sterilize it.

Swim has had this happen.  Only one cake effected, but it was just into 2nd flush. Out it went!

Moral of the story: sterilize/pasteurize.

You shouldn't be rolling after the first flush.
Just dunk & place back into fruiting.

It is unnecessary and often causes contaminates.

Verm DOES NOT HAVE to be sterilized....verm that is in a sealed package should be contam free and sterile, verm that has been open and laying around to where maybe a contam could get in could be sterilized, but at the same time we are rolling a fully colonized cake in it.

And it is my understanding that a 100% fully colonized cake is pretty much contam resistant. So its kind of pointless to sterilize verm so it wont contam a fully colonized, contam resistant cake.....

I do not and will not ever sterilize my verm, I see no need, not saying its the right way, but its my way.

Never sterilized my verm either, just kept it closed. Yet to have a contam issue. But I think it's good sterile procedure to do so, doesn't hurt anything.

Yea, I agree that a fresh brand spanking new bag of verm is probably pretty sterile considering how it is made.  but when you stick your grubby hands in there or if you open and close it alot it becomes contaminated so why the hell not take the time to cook it?  You got nothing to lose....and you are rolling your nice cakes in it...just sayin'

Oh I know, but at the same time...I was just sayin too....it doesnt HAVE to be sterilized...but again, this is one of those things that can be summed up as personal preference.

Didnt mean to step on anyones toes, you are a trusted cultivator for a reason, and I respect that. I'm sure your wealth of knowlegde in this far surpasses mine as I still consider myself a noob.
