Well, I wasn't even aware that user's couldn't make their own polls in there until you mentioned it. Upon further investigation I found this thread, in which Thor states:

"We could change that forum to have 'approved posts' intead of only the admins.

We just have to review the post before its approved so that we don't get some silly poll.. Those polls in that forum are meant for more official type stuff, even though so far its been a bit silly."



The Polls forum should
...only allow administrative polls (as it currently stands)
...only allow approved polls (full moderation, like ODD)
...be a free for all (as I believe it once was in the past, but there were so many random polls that there wasn't as much participation to each individual question as would be hoped)

I voted for the fully moderated option. Polls give a more accurate representation when they get a lot of votes. By keeping the number of polls down, results would be easier to read.

By making it a free-for-all, there would be a lot of inane and silly polls which would envelop and hide the good polls. Basically making it a free-for-all would result in as much chaos as you get in OTD.

Good polls could include things important and relative to the shroomery, feedback, major current affairs issues, drug issues, and maybe the occasional fun poll.

Example:

Is Marijuana a Gateway Drug?
Yes, Marijuana use will inevitably lead to harder drug use
Possibly, it's down to the individual.
No, Marijuana use does not encourage individuals to try harder drugs



It'd be good if it was fully-moderated, but discussion should also be permitted - e.g. I'm sure people would have a lot to say about the above poll.

If it is decided to go fully-moderated, I'd be happy to volunteer. :smile:

No, only admins can create new threads. Members, mods, and admins are currently free to post in the existing threads.

That's pretty much what I felt. With a bit of attention, regular, thoughtful and pertinent polls then it could be a pretty cool place.

Over a week has passed and 70% think it should be fully moderated.

I thought it would be pretty cool, if there was a guide to posting polls, similar to the picture posting one. This is similar to the one included in the UBB threads FAQ, but is easier to read and follow. What do you think:


As a newcomer to the Shroomery forums you may come across several posts which include polls, and may want to include a poll of your own in one of your own posts.

It really isn't hard; as the code is already written all you need to do is choose the relevant options whilst posting.

Polls have three parts:

The Poll Start

Clicking this option in the Instant UBB Code box will prompt you for a title for you poll. In my example I'll type in Is This A Helpful Post?

The Poll Option(s)

Clicking this option in the Instant UBB Code box will prompt you for an option for your poll. I'm going to include just two options for my poll: Yes and No

There is no limit to the number of options you can have in the poll.

The Poll Stop

Clicking this option in the Instant UBB Code box signifies the end of the poll building process. And inserts a Submit Vote button to the end of the poll. Without this, other users will not be able to submit a vote.

Final Product:


Is This A Helpful Post
Yes
No



Notes:

Posts with polls in them cannot be edited but they may be deleted.
You can only include one poll in each post.

Update:  GumbyDude & Alien have taken it upon themselves to fully moderate the polls forum.  So while many may enter... few will win :grin:
