What about a downloadable archive of the Shroomery?
    #1766967 -

I'm looking around at other site, http://www.nansnook.com to be exact.

And they have a pretty nice idea.

You can download the entire site (for personal archive/offline browsing). As seen here - http://www.nansnook.com/archives/download.html

I would love to see this with the shroomery!

Once a month, offer a new downloadable archive like nans nook.

I completely understand that its going to be HUGE! a few gigs... but with the age of cable modems/DSL and other fast connections, it could be done.

Any thoughts on this?

Lana

Mycotopia sells CDs... Which have a bunch of extractions and cultivation teks. A few mycology things that are better than the shroomery archives (like on the subject of cloning)

That is an awesome idea Lana, especially if this site went down somehow, for people to have copies of it all over the world.

It could be a huge file, how about a version with no pics?

Sourceforge.net might be a possible place to host such a file. Free file hosting, over 100 megs.

Another idea might be to sell CDs or DVDs of the Shroomery, with the profits going to the site.

hmmmm

/me thinks.

Would it be possible to include only a few forums?  In other words no OTD

I'm willing to do it but I just need more information.  Even if I have to find a host.  I'm not to knowledgeable on bandwidth and its price anymore.

If the file/ISO is large, I can't see a lot of people downloading it, but I'm sure there will be a few.  Especially those who want to browse offline while travelling (like me)

I think it is an awesome idea.. I have thought of it at times too.
It would be large but i would be willing to download it
strictly for archive purposes. You never know this site could be shut down someday. It would be great if a bunch of us had an archive.

matts, thats a very good point....

/me thinks....

I know that this probably wouldn't be possible but I've gotta ask...

I can see that users names/ratings/location etc is in a column on the left hand side of each page.

If there was some way that we could delete that column, all you'd see are the posts.  No user names.  I'm sure that there will be some user names in the posts, but thats life

A downloadable version of the FAQ would be cool, but it definitely wouldn't be as extensive as an entire download of a forum.  There are just too many little tricks of the trade that generally aren't included in the FAQ.

Ok, hows this for a corn ball idea!

A database of all the user names is put togehter, run a script that cross references the names with any text on a page.  If a users name is on a page it would be *** out

I got the idea from a meta tag generator I once saw

Any more ideas?

I've been thinking about this...

I understand Matts views and agree. So I thought, maybe a downloadable version of the FAQ's?

The whole purpose of this idea is for archiving as well as referrence.

I looked back at nans nook.. Then I realized that maybe I should rephrase my statement.

I'm only thinking of a downloadable version of the treadd and posts, NOT the entire website.

If John Doe post about growing a million pounds of shrooms, unless you have John Does IP address (or he posts his address) to go after a ficticious name may be hard.

Its a stretch, but there's truth behind it.

Also, if of taking that left hand column out, you wouldn't know who posted what? Even if someone said within the post "Hey Username, nice setup". Prove Username posted it.

Why do you think you never hear of cases of people who post on message boards getting busted. They don't get busted for what they write, they get busted for what they do.

Well, they would if they lived during the 3rd reich!

I'd still like to hear your ideas on this, so spit'em out!

Re: What about a downloadable archive of the Shroomery? [Re: Lana]
    #1784258 -

first of all,
boxtop,
if i'm an ass then so is nan,
because he's doing the exact same thing.
yet you single me out to call me names,
what's your problem ?
i thought when i lifted the ban on you,
we had resolved our problem.
seems i was giving you too much credit.

anyway, i don't sell-out my member base.
i select, via my software,
what goes on my cd's,
and it doesn't include our member list.
no IP info is included, just html text files and pix.
nan's download originally came from mycotopia,
it was our first attempt, our 10,000 post archive.
he's plagarized it, of course, by removing both
mycotopia's and my name [even from my own posts!!!], but it's still essentially the
same that he took from me with some more recent material
from the nook itself, and everything else he could find on the web worth taking.
but mycotopia's has now grown much larger,
so downloading it via FTP
is not really an option any more.
we now have 2 files, one is about 162 meg zipped,
the other is about 260 meg zipped.
the larger is more recent,
the smaller contains many posts we were forced to
delete from our online message base due to space constraints.
i only include the relevant forums,
the archives, fungi, botanicals, etc.
but i could break it up into individual forums
if i desired.
my suggestion for you all would be to create a special forum and move the 'best of the best' into that forum and just export that material onto cd.
we've been charging $15, including shipping, for our cd,
which easily holds both large files.
i imagine shroomery would need 2 cds, minimum, though,
to hold it all.
no download problems with a cd either.
i don't know exactly how many we've sold so far since we
began offering the cd a couple months ago,
but we proly average 1-2 a week,
so a place as popular as shroomery could, in theory,
sell many more.
i think it's a great idea, that's why i did it.
folks can browse offline at their leisure,
a big plus for those on dial-up.
good luck with your project.
peace

I think I've got it!

Have you ever seen on those dating website, or sites like friendster, I think even ebay has it...

Anywho...  on the site, if there is a "questionable" picture.  There's a little checkbox that you can check that says "Flag for Review".

Well, what would it take, to have a little tiny checkbox incorporated in every thread?  If someone thinks its good enough to be archived, then they'll check it, a PM will be sent to the mods of that forum so that they can review it, they approve it and TA DA, its archived?

It's a good way to get everyone involved (different perspectives are always nice to have).

I just don't know if it can technically be done?

If so, a new downloadable file can be pubically offered monthly.

Junk threads can easily be discarded and we can also contribute the mushroom related threads to the FAQ.

I would definitely help out

HTTrack Website Copier - Offline Browser

It is smart enough to only download the site it skipz the forum

but skipping the forums would miss much of shroomery's wealth of information, there is great stuff buried in there. shroomery is kinda like a gold mine, and you gotta dig to find the gold. y'all need to assign one mod full time to just tracking down and flagging/moving the 'gold' into a special section [whatever you decide to call that].
that step alone, gathering the greatest threads into a single area, would make shroomery much more useful and informative to the masses.
that's really the 1st step on the way to making downloadable database, gathering the wheat from the chaff so to speak.

I agree with Hippie, you'd have to have the forums included.  Thats where the gold is:)

The more I think about this the more I realize that this would be a VERY big project.  There are years and years of information and cataloging that would need to be done.

I'm thinking of two things...

1. Do a complete backup of the entire site once a month.  Burn onto CD or DVD and then distribute.  If the admins are up for this idea, I would be willing to have the CD's made and shipped.  Just send me one master copy once a month and I'll send them out for free.

2. Organize a group of people to go though the forums and clean them up!  This can be done but the people choosen to review the posts would need to be up for the challenge.  The mushroom cult. forum would take the longest.

Mushroom Cultivation - Avg posts per day  242.92 - Total posts  220329

Adv. Mush Cult. - Avg posts per day  32.27 - Total posts  29270

Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms - Avg posts per day  5.64 - Total posts  5118

Mushroom Hunting - Avg posts per day  45.83 - Total posts  41575

Contamination Forum - Avg posts per day  10.91 - Total posts  8928

Grow Log and Pictures - Avg posts per day  106.51  - Total posts  46762

FAQ Contributions - Avg posts per day  0.83  - Total posts  286

Now most of these forums were created on 03/01/01, which unless an admin tells me differently, we have access to threads that date back to 03/01/01 ???

I haven't included forums like "General Questions, Trip Tips, or ODD"...  Right now I'm just working on strictly mushroom cultivation

If idea #1 is put into place, we won't need anyone to really sift through threads/posts, and people can dig for themselves on what information they want to find (as difficult as that may sometimes be).

The downside is all of the junk/repeatitave threads/posts and lack of organization.

If idea #2 is put into place, we'd practically have a shroomery novel on our hands:)  Clean cut information, easy to use and find.

The downside is that its going to take a long time to catch up.  You're looking at organizing over 2 years worth of info.  Although, once its done, it would only need to be updated once a month.

What do ya think?

I think the username/ip story is BS no offence and a non issue.

Reason PUBLIC forum if someone wants your ip about what you are posting they allready got it and won't i repeat won't get that kind of info from a cd or downloadable version of plain text and pic's.

And if you don't want your post to be used than u shouldn't post at all cauze copys will be made if u like it or not.....

Ok, since I'd like to implement this idea, I'm thinking of starting slow.

I need a new CDR burner, so I was thinking of just getting a good DVD-R burner. 4.7 GB compared to 800mb.

ISO images burned to disc with a basic read-only offline version of the site.

I'm going to PM 3D and see what he thinks?

Did they finnally stanardize dvd writers? If not i couldnt recomend using those for back-up...

What would be perfect is if 3D could write a little script to drop the DB's to a "shit ton" of regular html files, one full thread per file. Of course the script would make a index for each forum and an index for the forums so it would basicly end up looking exactly like the original, but tonned down to just text.

Re: What about a downloadable archive of the Shroomery? [Re: Anno]

Let me recap

A lot of people who don't want to sit online but would rather dig through the forums offline, can get an archived format of the site.

Some forums wouldn't be included such as OTD, the mods forum, etc... Just the mushroom cultivating forums.

I was told that the entire backup of the site was.... about 5GB ?

I've volunteered to mail out any DVD copies to people who would want them, I would just need one master copy to start with

An archived version of the forums on DVD is right now, more cost effective than using up bandwidth.

Once every quarter or twice a year, we can offer an updated archive.  I'd mail and produce them for free (not terribly expensive) or people can donate a dollar or two to the shroomery.

The biggest problem we had was security.  People who post pics of their grow may get paranoid!!  So the idea of having a read only, all usernames are changed to "anonymous" would greatly help.  No IP records or logs would be encluded on the archive.

Also would stop people from being able to decide that "so-and-so" is a good and reliable source of info, looking for their posts to read.

It would severely hurt the informational aspect of it to disinclude the little internet names.
