I just returned from one. It was not really retreat as we know it, but it surely affected me in a positive way.
It was 3 day martial arts camp in nature. I really pushed myself to my physical limits there, I feel that my mind is much 'clearer' now.

Also, I got my ass kicked by woman.

A really interesting form of retreat I recently heard about is the chilla. Classical hindustani musicians lock themselves up for 40 days and do nothing but play their instrument and eat very minimally. There is no contact with outside and the practitioner must use every waking moment to practise their instrument. Sleep is to be avoided as much as possible and if woken mid-sleep the practitioner must immediately commence practicing again.

did one of those 10 day vipassana meditation retreats... hardest mind exercise i could never have imagined.  paid off in the end, experienced some astral stuff and obe stuff.  the last days felt like ecstasy.

it's like going through a hard, high dose psychedelic trip, except with psychedelics you kind of have no choice in how deep you're gonna go.  during the retreat, you really have to overcome those inner demons telling you to give up and stray from focus.  those demons are similar to those when experiencing ego loss on a psychedelic.  some have enough conscience to know that it's just a trip and some freak out and try their hardest to hold on to what was.

saving up for a dark room retreat, sounds pretty far out but i've met someone who's experienced it and well... call me gullible but there's no way i can't not do this.

Quote:
"The DarkRoom meditation releases us from the bonds of the Earth. No longer controlled by the rotating power of the Earth, the Sun and the Moon, the organs vibrate in unison with the spiritual stars, the Gates of Heaven."

Master Chia will teach the Lesser, Greater and Greatest Kan and Li in the Darkroom facility at the Universal Tao Center and Tao Master School at Tao Garden Health Spa & Resort Chiang Mai,Thailand.

Take advantage of our Darkroom Retreat technology here at Tao Garden . Participants stay in the absolute darkness atmosphere during the full week(s) of their training. This yields the best results due to the natural changes in the biochemistry of the brain, the relaxed atmosphere, enhanced inner focusing and the enriched energetic atmosphere of group meditations led by Master Chia. Share the subdued excitement of experiencing newly discovered realities in an ambience of friendly camaraderie among kindred spirited participants from around the planet.

' Dark matter' is not dark. The "dark matter" that one encounters in the prolonged Darkness Retreat is matter that is void of charged particles and therefore cannot be seen with our normal vision. It can interpenetrate with visible matter. Think of it as 'atoms' which are held together by a 'force' other than electromagnetic force and that these 'atoms' are not visible to our normal vision, yet they can interpenetrate with visible atoms. Varieties of finer matter exist not only in the world without, but they exist in man also. Our subtle bodies and subtle matter are composed of various forms of uncharged "dark matter." Time-space relationships are dependent upon the type of matter one is conscious of or experiencing. The sense of time and space associated with these various forms of subtle matter are different from that associated with visible matter.

When one acquires an awareness of his/her subtle bodies, there is light galore, but it is not the light seen with our physical body's eyes. There are objects and scenes of magnificent beauty and distinct beings in beautiful light body form as real in appearance as people in our physical form. There are infinite fascinating possibilities that one may experience. In the Darkness Retreat you will learn and practice techniques that make it possible to experience the universe from the perspective of your subtle bodies. You can observe the "dark matter" with your "dark matter" subtle body vision. You may see within and/or beyond.
Explore your unique and wondrous possibilities within-whether it be journeying through DNA memories, having a spontaneous healing occurrence, profound emotional revelations, lucid dreaming, inner light experiences, seeing in other dimensions through the inner 'third eye,' or perhaps flying beyond the highest mountains and out among the stars. Fascinating and inspirational new experiences arise in Tao Garden 's comfortable 'five star' Darkroom accommodations.

there's dark retreats as part of Dzogchen meditation in tibetan buddhism that i've heard about & that sound pretty awesome too. i read about one woman ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayu_Khandro_Dorje_Paldr%C3%B6n ) who spent 55 years straight in dark retreat!! pretty neat imo

How long ago did you do the vipassana meditation? Would you do it again? That's a really good analogy for it (re: difficult trip).

Good luck on the dark room retreat. Fascinating stuff!

This was amazing.
A great learning experience.
I'm giving it evaluation/judgement right now, which was the very thing to let go of... and we sealed the experience to not return to the past and think about it, which is another thing I'm not doing right now...
haha
I was walking around for two years with awakened kundalini without knowing it, now it just makes sense.

It's fine.

Missed your post... it was around 2 years ago.  Yes I would definitely do it again and would like to try for 1-3 times per year but not just yet, it can be pretty hard on the psyche which isn't for me at this time in my life.  When things become more stable, for sure.  If you are prone to psychosis it can really bring it out and lead to a personal meltdown.  This of course could be considered an initiation in itself into a new way of thinking, once the pieces are put back, but if you have to maintain a solid sense of identity because of school or work it may be more destructive than good.  I'd recommend having some months after the retreat to ground.  The pressure of having to function in society makes grounding much more difficult so having some space afterward to integrate the newfound perspective would be the safest way.  Though, if you're not prone to psychosis or anxiety or personal meltdowns and have somewhat of a hard head, especially when using hallucinogens, then I'd recommend it regardless.
