retreats
    #16738353 -

i was wondering if anyone here has done any retreats (meditation retreats or otherwise) and how that went. i've been reading a few biographies of tibetan masters who spent their lives doing lots of solitary retreat and its quite inspirational (imo ) and wanted to hear people's thoughts on this.

i posted a while ago about the western nun, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, who did 12 years of meditation alone in a cave... there's many other examples of similar retreats too. to me, this sounds like it could potentially have quite an amazing transformative effect on someone if they pull it off well. :sun: what say ye?

I've retreated from every gf I've ever had.

As to this meditation stuff, I very seriously doubt that you would get the same results as someone who was trained in meditation from a young age.  That imo is the best way to get serious results. Reincarnate as a baby monk and then get to it.  I'm serious, if I had that choice knowing what I know now that would be my direction.  As fucking far up the mountain and as isolated from the world as I could possibly get.

starting from a young age is definitely a much better situation - but with enough practice i don't think anyone, no matter how old when they start, won't see benefits and progress with the practice. of course, someone who gets started young is more wired for it and will likely progress much more in the same amount of time. though you also run the risk of rejecting it if you were introduced to it early (if it was forced on you). but yeah, my next life i'm starting way younger

You can always get some benefits but to really plumb the depths of the meditation potential you need the relatively blank brain slate of youth imo.  I just ran into  an old psychonaut friend who has been in close study with some rinposhe for the last 10 years and had just returned from Tibet. A truly brilliant guy who studies everything. Anyway I asked him point blank about his work in meditation and he frowned and then said, "man it's very very difficult". I said do you like to meditate and do you do it daily and he looked kind of sad and said, "man it's really difficult. We hung talking about our journeys of the mind for about three hours and found we had mostly come to the same conclusions.  He asked about getting some XTC,:satansmoking:

yeah meditation can be difficult, lots of potential obstacles can arise - and you're right you need good conditions to get the right state of mind (such as no childhood abuse probably, no addictions, etc). it's unfortunate how difficult it is to get into meditation, it's very discouraging and easy to give up and takes quite a while until the practice becomes enjoyable and the benefits are seen.

@whitebeard:  must have been awkward

Yeah, it was. The meditation instructor didn't seem to mind so it was all good. :sun:

 Yeah most likely.

Hopefully this doesn't change my karma so I get reborn as a carpet or a tea plant.

Perhaps it's peaceful. Carpets don't have quite as many neurotic thoughts as us humans do. You'd have to get used to getting walked all over tho.

I did an interesting retreat with around 40 people this year. 3 days of complete silence, no eye contact, thoughtlessness and here-now experience. It consisted of mainly zen meditation, yoga nidra, hatha yoga and long walks in the forest.
The energy was great, we had some buddhist monks with us and there was lots of various spiritual experiences among the people. I was surprised to find out that although I didn't engage in thought for 3 days, I suddenly had answers to questions I've been asking myself for months.
We are doing it again next month; looking forward to it.

I've signed up for a few vipassana 10-day ones, but they are always full. Hopefully I can beat the waiting list one day...I'd love to try it. I've attempted doing meditation retreats on my own, but it just wasn't happening.

Googling Jetsunma, now! Thanks for the namedrop.
