Why does Tool do this to me? * 1
    #16848606 -

3+ years ago I discovered Tool, what a night that was. It was what I had been looking for, the type of music I was desiring all along. I have listened to Slipknot mostly since I was a kid, I can never get enough of them.

But what is it about Tool that makes them so fucking entrancing and mysterious. Every song they do is a masterpiece. Maynards lyrics blow my mind sometimes, and they never get old.. never overplayed.

Like today I worked a 15 hour day, 5am to 8pmish, outdoor work. Then on my way home my local radio station threw in a Tool song and as soon as it started I got chills and felt like bashing my fucking steering wheel into bits the surge of power you can feel through your whole body was like an awesome drug but spritually cleansing all at once. After the song was over I felt renewed like I didn't just kill myself for 15hours.

How can a song do this? It's just controlled noise.
Does anyone else feel Tool like this?

The Wings of Marie Pt 2 is an absolute piece of art. Only the most closeminded person in the world could disagree.

However, your love of slipknot saddens me

I can relate, I love Tool. I wouldn't say every song they make is a masterpiece, but I will say that they make more consistently good music than most musicians.

Their best stuff definitely makes me feel quite similar to what you described.

Listened to them since I was 13 and didn't have a clue what psychedelics were, didn't really understand lyrics either.  Re-discovered them after using LSD... man, what a mindfuck.

From slipknot to tool, we must be twins.

Do you listen to much else? I never did, but I do now.

I got into Rammstein too, I get a lot of power from songs like this, I don't even know what the he is saying, and I don't need too. I can feel it.

This song gets me going.

And this song is the saddest shit I've ever heard and the video is so fucking twisted and delicious. Overwhelming emotion at points.

Heres the sickest vid Ramm did, I think at one point he is sucking on a black dildo and chewing the wings off an angel. The song is great.

Another fking winner:

The Ramm needs recognition they kick ass.

Actually between Slipknot, Tool, Nine inch nails and Rammstein, and a few Metallica songs thats about all I like in all of todays music.

Tool is incredible, but have any of you given Radiohead a solid try? They make me feel even crazier than Tool does. At times it's as if I'm tripping while completely sober.

Other musicians that reach the heights of Tool and Radiohead for me are Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Burial.

Yes motherfucker:

Weird, I've never felt the urge to bash anything while listening to Tool. I think that kinda goes against what their message is, especially Lateralus onward.

Its the overwhelming flush of happy and things I can't explain which caused me to want to release energy and bash something nothing to do with their message or lyrics.

Tool has discovered the formula, maaan. The song Lateralus uses the fibonacci series in it's vocals.

The first time I ever heard anything off Lateralus (which is now my favorite album) was hearing them play it live in concert. It was a transcendant experience I'll never forget.

I've put together a playlist of what I consider to be their most beautiful and meaningful songs, give it a listen on psychs sometime. Runs a little over an hour. I like to play it through winamp with my favortie milkdrop presets.

Lipan Conjuring
Intension
Right in two
Mantra
Parabol/Parabola
Lateralus
Disposition
Reflection
Triad

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself between the sounds and open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin. I'm reaching up and reaching out, I'm reaching for the Random or whatever will bewilder me (whatever will bewilder me) and following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been. We'll ride the Spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out, keep going...

Every time I hear certain Tool songs I get completely tranced out, which sucks because I'm usually driving while listening to it. It's a borderline psychedelic experience that I could never explain. Especially on the lead-ups in Sober and the transition between Parabol and Parabola. It's very similar to what you experienced. I used to almost think Maynard was some borderline higher being or was just able to tap into some higher power to write music. But then I came down and realized it's just really good music :tongue2:

The main drum/bass riff from Reflection gets me like that. And the lyrics are pure poetry. Music just doesn't get any more powerful.

I'm definitely down with them both, thought about mentioning Puscifer but figured that's a whole other thread. Momma Sed is probably my favorite of theirs, but there's a lot of good stuff. Maynard's pre-Tool band Children of the Anacronistic Dynasty has it's moments too. Dude's just a genius that's all there is to(ol) it.

Listening to Wings for Marie pt1-2 on max volume with good headphones, in a dark room, actually makes you feel like your tripping, I got a body buzz and good sensations from it, i feel fucking amazing.

Please never end.
