It's more about the history of criticism than the syncopation of dubstep.

THanks playfulhate that was a cool video. I used to hate dubstep but I'm slowly finding tracks that I enjoy quite a lot. Not really into that skrillex type shit tho :justdontknow:

There's plenty of awesome dubstep out there. Is it avant garde music? No.

The word just means experimental or innovative, and is only understood relative to popular culture. What was once avant garde is fully capable of becoming mainstream and trite.

I think whether dubstep can be considered avant garde is much less interesting than considering the question: how long can something be considered avant garde? I mean, considering how "new" this particular genre of music is, the fact that is has already been hammered out and watered down by global artists says a lot about the spread of information, the flux of memes, our preference for novelty, and so on.

Lastly, I think this title - and true to PBS, if that's who made it - is geared towards the older generation and people who aren't inundated with the electronic scene. As younger psychonauts we're veterans of the shit and scoff at late comers, but this is still random noise to a lot of people.
