I haven't been able to figure out why people give a shit about this man's opinion.  He isn't a political figure, not in office.  So why are so many politicians who ARE in office even responding to his statements.

If its just that his company won't recognize gay marriages then so what.  It's a fast food job.  If an employee  disagrees move on to Burger King.  Its gotten ridiculous that everyone has to be so damn politically correct.  If the guy wants to be an asshole, let em.

Cathy is representative of much of the opinion in the Deep South - especially Baptists. He is not some lone nutter.
Chick Fil-A gives large donations to the Eagle Ranch, a Christian home for wayward boys where my brother works. You get one guess what my brother's stance is.

Besides, what if want to get me some faggoty chicken - where do I go?

Re: Chick Fil-A president on same-sex marriage [Re: Cactilove]

marriage's sacred status was a result of the turmoil of the investiture controversy, during which pope gregory vii called a synod declaring that the church has the sole authority to elect its officials and govern it along with granting the papacy the authority to depose kings and dissolve their vassalships. papal control was additionally exercised through the churches assertion of their authority over marriage. intermarrying between the families of laypersons - namely kings and lords - was viewed as a threat to papal authority due to the complex system of vassalships that was arterial to the socio-political conditions of the high middle ages. one powerful family could marry into another and essentially inherit vassals that would be loyal to them over the papacy. thus marriage between aristocratic families was to be performed only under the approval of the papacy, and the gregorian reforms secured the papacy's place in history as a major player.

the argument of marriage's sanctity can be seen as invalid in the light of it being deeply rooted in politics rather than theology, and anyone who backs this claim is either a) completely ignorant of history or b) banking on you being completely ignorant of history. as far as the president of chic-fil-a goes, my hunch is his position is a result of the former. be that as it may, i would prefer it if companies would focus on things they excel at like providing the services that made them successful in the first place. what's wrong with just selling chicken?

While I admit that the Deep South still has a strong Christian influence don't put us all on that boat.  You prob did that on purpose just to zing me!  Atlanta does have a huge homosexual community.  And we aren't all ultra conservative.  There's lots of us hippies here.  Just alot of em don't get on the internet much.  Cuz they haven't found a website like this that's interesting.

Having been married I find it over rated. If homosexuals want to spend thousands of dollars on a stupid ceremony and then thousands more trying to get away from each other let em.  I think it has more to do with getting on each others insurance and having some say so regarding medical choices.

These politicians that are making such a big deal about a private businessman's opinions have just found a safe way to get media attention and make them sound good on a stance that really doesn't matter.

Completely agreed. Freedom also entails me to say that Dan Cathy is a douchebag prick who is following the texts of 2000 years ago far too literally. But as far as stopping him - I can't when legally he's doing nothing wrong.

What the hell does literalism have to do with this?

This bullshit seems a convieniant dodge people make to negotiate away the dissonance they feel at calling people like this guy a retard when they love people who claim to follow the same books of immoral proverbs.

There's absolutely no reason that literalism should be thought of as more problematic than some ridicuous interpretation.  (how the fuck are you supposed to read the book, OZA?)

The only reason the fundametalists tend to be giant assholes is because the fundamentals of the faith are horrible and its hard to get much worse by making up your own bullshit.  This has nothing to do with the reasonableness of either action- at least fundamentalists seem intellectually honest with themselves.

Bud I haven't read the bible. I have no interest in it along with religion.

Your silly statement makes more sense in this regard.  Are you just parroting things you've heard then?  How could you possibly have a well thought out position that literalism is a particular problem if you don't know what the litteral is.

Quote:
Are you on this guy's side? I don't get it.

Let me explain: it's called intellectual honesty and not bullshitting a reason to back up your preconceived notions.  My desires have, ideally, nothing to do with what I believe to be true.

Quote:
Whether something is said specifically about gays, or he interpreted something from the bible to be against gays I do not know. What I know is this guy is clearly a freak who can't adapt to current times.
Did Jesus literally turn water to wine?
Did Moses literally split a sea to cross it?
One shouldn't take what the bible says literally. They also shouldn't interpret it like Dan Cathy.

What does what Jesus did have to do with anything?  We have no decent reason to believe he did any of those things, bu what does appealing to some nebulous "interpretation" which you've not actually offered, help?

All you seem to be doing is saying you don't like the book so you should interpret it tortuously as neccesary to get to a result you like.  That's utterly inconsistant with the book being a benevolent god's word to man- if you allready have the a priori knowledge of what the book should be interpreted to, then you don't need the book and in what sense are you religious at all?

Further, you've yet to defend your "literalism" slur.  Why is literalism worse?

Alright since taking the bible too literally got stuck up your ass, I'm going to address that issue. It's no slur, it's reading it too literally.

I won't address how religious I am because you're just looking for things to pick apart while still not taking either side, much less addressing the Dan Cathy issue.

I offered the water to wine and parting the red see to imply that taking what the bible says literally won't give you the right information.

Now here's another example of what I mean by interpreting the bible literally. This relates to this homosexual argument too.

"Leviticus 20:13 - "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads." (NIV)"

So should gay men be put to death? To the average person (which may not include you), the answer is no.
Do you understand now that I'm saying don't read the bible to literally?

So why is literalism worse? Well, shit I don't know, maybe because it would lead to a homosexual genocide. If you don't see a problem with that, I'll just stop wasting my time with you.

You have a point. Maybe there is none. Maybe it was meant to be taken literally. And that's the scary part of it. Thus, I do not follow the bible.

again, per my post above, the sanctity of marriage has nothing to do with literalism and everything to do with the politics of the high middle ages.

It boggles the mind how you purport to show that literalism is worse when you don't even make a comparison.  All you say is that literalism would lead to a homosexual genocide- so what?

Wait a second, you claim literal interpretations of scripture are worse, and then a few posts later say that there isn't any non-literal interpretation?  WTF is your position on this?

You've still not answered my arguments, and have contradicted yourself.

So what about homosexual genocide? You're a fucking idiot.

You can win this argument for all I care, I'm dealing with some crazed bible salesman as far as I know. I'd say it's because of your religion, but you'd probably be off the deep end regardless. Religion is just your vehicle along with many other people.
I've told you my position. You're the one who hasn't told me yours. I am against the bible wholeheartedly, many of its teachings are outdated. Dan Cathy's a bible thumping freak, I am against him too.

I haven't answered many of your questions because they're COMPLETELY irrelevant to the original matter (which you have still not addressed). You obviously had nothing else to say to my first post, so you chose to pick apart reading the bible literally.

EDIT: Oh boy I see that you have a UFO sightings thread. I see what you're all about..Well I'm not going to reply to your next post..Hopefully I don't see you around these forums much.
Peace

What does my "position" on some unstated issue have to do with anything?  If you can't defend your statements then withdraw them.

Interesting that you've decided, without any reasoning at all, that because I disagree with you I must have any number of beliefs you've done me the service of naming.  What does my position on any of those have to do with anything?

Yes, this is all accurate, but I have no idea why you're asserting this.  Sorry, but your assertions are fair game.  If you, like me, can't see any defense to your staements then the sensible thing to do would be to withdraw them rather than making increasingly irrelevant objections.
