On Being a 10" Skep Dick

Time and time again, I hear that skeptics are merely close-minded, cyncial, arm chair researchers with an axe to grind on anything seemingly deviating from accepted science and belittle those who dare to stray from the norm.

There may be some that fit that category, but most that I know are keenly curious about new ideas else they would not even take the time to read, research and respond.

All "we" ask is that ideas that are claimed as fact stand up to close scrutiny. And that ideas claimed as a new hypothesis are internally consistent and have no simpler explanation. THAT IS ALL. Is that unreasonable? If so, why?

it isn't no much unreasonable as it is unrealistic. From what I've seen, the most significant understandings to be had are actually the exact opposite of those which "stand up" under strict scrutiny. no, not quantum particles, I mean abstract concepts like love and friendship and tipping and smoking a nice phat bowl of kind bud and heroism and that sort of thing. they 'defy logic', if you will.

One of the problems I have with this is that I don't believe the simplest explanation is always the correct one.

William of Occam and his razor ain't God, yo. The simplest explanations aren't always the most truthful ones, (although they often are).

So I lose respect for any Skep Dick that totally rules out possibilities based on it's "unlikelyness".  :thumbdown:

it may be a little arcane, but its fully functional in our current social context. in order for the individual to understand the complexity of his/her sensory experience, we have to limit our scope to all which is material, in hopes that it symbolizes something more spiritual. and as a consequence, human life attains freedom, freedom from reality pollution. that is evolution in action my friend.

Yeah, no one ever throws away a good poker hand just because it's an unlikely combination of cards. Improbable things happen, they just happen less often than probable things. But Occam's razor is not about unlikeliness, it's about choosing the simplest of two explanations that describe the patterns in the data equally well. Pseudo-scientists don't use Occam's razor because they are not interested in increasing our knowledge about the world, they are more interested in establishing theories that fit well with their own wishful thinking.

Swami could elaborate on what he means by "simpler", but i think that if you absorb yourself in that then you're missing the point. A slight reformulation on that particular sentence if you will:

"And that ideas claimed as new hypothesis are internally consistent and are of the most defensible position."

Plus, some of the things people say to explain...interesting...phenomina are usually NOT the more likely situation (but im just building on Rhizoid's point).

Its hard to bring the most solid evidence, to this forum because this is STILL an area of study. And is kept on the down low anyways.
