I don't think this is actually teleportation. It's more like moveable cloning; they destroy the light, then they make a replica in another spot. I mean, I'm sure it would work for the super computer thing, but is it actually teleportation? Unless i'm missing something..

If the "life essence" can be transported by walking, then surely a teleportation device should be able to transport it too. Is there any reason to believe otherwise?

The interesting food for thought is what happens if you clone two or three copies when you teleport yourself.

reminds me of a red dwarf episode where they clone a strawberry. they get a perfect strawberry, and also a nasty rotting strawberry. there is an accident and they clone the ship, creating a 'perfect' ship and an 'evil' ship.

I still don't believe that this is teleportation. Did they actually make the real light deconstruct, and then move it to somewhere else? Or did they just destroy it and create a perfect replica in a different spot? Cause that's what I got out of it...

When you walk around, you create an imperfect replica of your previous self in a different spot, or in lots of different spots in sequence actually. So I think we can even relax slightly the condition that the replica must be perfect. My operational definition of teleportation is that if it can reasonably produce the same result as if I had walked to the other location, assuming that it's a location I could walk to, then it counts as teleportation.

Precicely ! brilliant !
it's the same way Artificial intelligence is defined... i.e.
not "can we make a computer program which is intelligent" but
rather "can we make a computer program which will satisfy
all criteria of intelligence", it's based on the result,
it's an "operational definition" instead of an "absolute
definition".

In Star Trek the technology used was of deconstruction of the being, they sent both the information and the actual data together in the stream, then used the exact atoms to reasemble and the information to coloborate.. I believe every atom has a soul, has an "essence" .. if your atoms are to be deconstructed, who is to say that they will be the same together, even though they are in the right order? .. moving is different, your atoms never seperate nor do any essential life functions stop. Even with that, we are no where near human telportation, the amount of energy we need to completely deconstruct every atom in a human being and record their exact points is many multiples more then all the power we have on the planet. Not to mention the task of, transporting the atoms if so, or even reconstructing the being to accuracy. CHARLES H. BENNETT is right, nothing until we develop warp technology :wink:

Well, if that is true then such an essence can't have any relevance in a warm body, because otherwise we would have Gibbs paradox (entropy would be broken if atoms were thermodynamically distinguishable).

And if that "essence" is relevant on some other level, then why not just let the teleportation device make a copy of the essence as well?

Did anyone hear that stuff about those scientists that accelerated light to like 300 times the speed of c, which in turn teleported the light to the end of the tube, but because it was going so fast it basically showed up before it was actually placed in the tube - basically sending it into the future? I can't remember exaclty how it works but it sounded really fuggin cool!

Yes, but no energy or information was transported at that speed. It's an apparent speed, just like the speed of the moving light spot when you wave a flashlight beam around. Here is a page that shows in pictures exactly how the trick is done:

It's possible to make the phase velocity or the group velocity of electromagnetic waves to exceed c, but not the signal velocity, which is the speed at which energy and information travels. There is a good mathematical explanation of these three kinds of wave velocities here:
