What languages can you speak?

What is your mother tongue, and how what and how well can you speak a  second, third language, etc.?  Just curious.


Myself, English is mother tongue, Japanese (fluent spoken poor writing reading) is second, spanish (decent understanding) is third, and turkish (basic conversation) is forth.  Also, Fresian dutch I can understand a good deal of.

Spanish (my first language )
and very few words in french .

English is my first language. I can also speak passable french, just the basics to survive in a french speaking country.

I can only speak English right now.

I just moved to Taiwan and am trying to learn Mandarin but we will see how well that goes over the next year.

If I don't make decent progress, I plan on going to costa rica to live with a family for a month and try to learn Spanish before returning to the states.

I'm not sure a month is long enough to become fluent though:shrug:

Only English, but I tried to learn spanish in high school.

You wont be fluent but you will learn a lot more then when you arrived .

HOWEVER...I met some cool cats from Saudi Arabia at school. Their gov gives out hella grants for education. Our school is flooded with saudi students majoring in mechanical engineering. Anyhow, Im getting all buddy-buddy with a few guys who say my degree is in high demand over in dubai, and they have plenty of connections for employment. They tell me if I were bilingual I could pull in $100,000 + a year, easy.

Im thinking its time to learn a new language :strokebeard:

Arabic? I'm fairly sure thats one of the most difficult new languages to learn. Whats your degree in?

the real way to learn a language is to live in that country and practice everyday.  If you put your mind to it, you can learn a lot in just 6 months. 

It took me 9 months in okinawa, with a few 8 week japanese courses at the university of maryland (on kadena air base) and daily speaking with japanese (no partying) to get where I was fluent enough to go down to Naha and pick up cute japanese chicks who didn't speak english. 

What a goal motivator. :awesomenod:

Im majoring in chemistry. Might go into chemical engineering afterwards...or get my masters degree in organic chemistry...or rock the fuck out of my mcat test and apply to medical school.

I'm fluent (spoken, reading and writing) in both Montenegrin and English. I also took 3 years of French in high school, but that doesn't really count for anything other than being able to ask where the bathroom is.

Can't really say anything for the major but Dubai is experiencing gargantuan amounts of growth. They needs lots of skilled workers and are willing to pay large sums for their services...though if it works out for you then expect to spend a hefty chunk of your paychecks on your food and other expenses. Cause they import almost everything so the price of goods is pretty high.

The Taiwanese girls I see walking around that I can't talk to are definitely a motivating factor in wanting to learn Mandarin.

Still, it seems like it would take years to get to the point where I could try and pick up a Taiwanese girl without making myself look like a complete ass

what do you think about betel nut girls?  They are a trip.  I went to Hsinchu city a couple of times in 2004.
