It's hard to define what it means to be able to speak a foreign language. After more than seven years here the language still trips me up. It's very hard. For an adult with average intelligence to learn to read and speak Japanese well it takes about 20 hours a week of study for about 4 years. You have to grind away at it. It won't come to you just because you live here. Their reading system is wildly complex.Perhaps the most difficult language in the world to read. You will not be able to learn Japanese in one year I can promise you that. Learning Japanese is a lifelong process.

I understand a fair amount of Japanese, and used to be able to read and write it. ( I was adopted by Japanese parents)
It's not that hard of a language to pick up oddly enough, because they actually incorporate alot of English into their language. Reading it is another matter altogether...they have 2 alphabets, Hiragana and Katakana...Hiragana is a more 'casual' form of writing and Katakana is more formal. Both are completely different from eachother as well in appearance.
You should have no problem picking up the language itself once you are there...the reading may take some time though.

Two alphabets plus thousands of Chinese characters. If you can't read kanji you can't read Japanese.
