Anyone speak Japanese?
    #3862200 -

I'm planning to move to Japan one year from June and was wondering if anyone here had learned to speak Japan, and how long it took you to get to the level of fluency you're at, both in reading/writing and in speaking.  Thanks. :smile:

Nope, just the learning curve.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

well once you learn the kanas and the sentence structure its really not very difficult,
they order sentences: subject, object, verb.
there are two types of every verb, polite and plain forms, and four conjugations for each: past, non-past, and positive, negative
you also have to learn several structure particles to identify which words are being used for what, e.g. ha (pronounced wa) is the topic marker, ni is the direction marker, o is the direct object.
so to say something like i will go to japan you would say
watashi wa nihon ni iku
watashi=I
nihon=japan
iku=to go
the four structures of the verb iku (ikimasu in the polite form) are
iku itta-----------------go, went
ikanai ikanakatta----dont go, didnt go
all the verbs follow a similar structure in conjugation with slight variations
doshite nihongo o oshieru?
why am i teaching you this?

anyway its not too difficult to learn, but then again it can be, to be able to at least get by over there, id suggest at least taking an introductory course in japanese, but a year or more will allow you to at least communicate and ask for things

Ohhh man, I love Japan, I've been wanting to go there for years, I watch lodes of Japanese films ( subtitled, errr no I don't understand a word except thanks and asshole and hello) They have a sense of humor which is very out there, very cool, and the horror is the scariest stuff around today. but by the looks of it you'll defiantly need to be able to read or you'll get lost straight away... You going to have an amazing experience!!!
