France moves to cap CEO wages * 1

Quote:
Elected this month promising to curb the privileges enjoyed by France's wealthy and powerful, Socialist President Francois Hollande pledged during campaigning to limit senior executives' salaries to a maximum of 20 times that of their lowest-paid employee.

"We are working on plans for pay at public companies to be cut," Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici told journalists on Wednesday after a cabinet meeting. These would be ready in two weeks, he said.

High executive pay has become a hot topic on both sides of the Atlantic, with U.S. and European companies seeing a rise in AGM votes against remuneration packages

Personally I find such a move a huge victory for the public, corporations should not have the freedom to operate under the loose regulations of the "free market" alone. such a large degree of freedom for social constructs whose powers rival that of countries should be regulated in the same manner as the governments that run countries. If there freedoms are not reigned in they will continue to undermine and corrupt democracy through lobbying, mass media and overarching economic decisions whose only drive is the benefit of the few. Although this legislation only covers that of state run corporations I see it as a huge step forward towards a strong democracy. I can only hope that it pass's into law.

Since when is free speech the enemy of democracy?  There is nothing democratic about government thugs telling private entities how much they should pay their employees.  Envious much?

I know the article was about public companies.  But Bodhi went further.  They can set the pay of their public employees at whatever the fuck they want, which is why I support the destruction of public employee unions.  If quality people won't take the jobs then they will have to raise the pay or take less qualified people.  But the idea that the government should be regulating the pay of private companies is absurd in a free country.

Agreed Zappa, it confuses me when I hear people saying certain individuals in a private business should only be "allowed" to make a certain amount of money

France is going down the tubes, they are in the thick of the Euro zone crisis. Hollande is a communist that is taking over a broke nation, and is making lots of promises that will be broken

Guess who owns Greek, Italian, and Spanish debt at 30 times leverage? French banks. The french people and politicians are in for a reality check approaching very soon, and most don't even know it.

Yeah.  A bit rediculous for any government to tell a private company how much they should pay their employees.... especially since government employees at the higher levels get paid a decent salary, practically CAN NOT be fired, and are lazy as fuck - mostly.

They can pay their employees whatever they want, the top executives however should not have unregulated control of their salaries. 20 times that of the lowest wage in the company is a ample wage its a preventive measure to ensure that a corporation with such a large public influence does not begin to trample all over its employees in the pursuit of increased profit margins for the benefit of the few at the top.

They dont.  Their salaries are chosen by shareholders, the owners of the company.  If the shareholders are overpaying an executive that is their loss.

The sole purpose of a company is to generate profits for the owners.  If the owners decide that the best way to do that is to competitively pursue and pay a star CEO that is their business and their business alone.  Unless you own stock in the company it is none of your fucking business.  Butt out.

I dunno man, that seems a little weird to me.

Whats the minimum you can make? 20000$ a year maybe.

So a CEO would be paid 400000 a year??????

Who the fuck wants to sell their body and soul to a corporation for like 30 years, knowing they have the potential to become the CEO and only make 400k a year?

After tax that's like 200k a year.

It also means that all the other employees in the entire corporation won't be able to make more than 400k a year. Cause no employee can make more money than their boss right?

France's public corporations are gonna lose a lot of highly skilled workers if this thing passes.

Or, every employee will get a massive pay raise in order to make the 20 times the lowest salary worth it.

I realized just now after writing this that CEOs normally own a large percentage of the corporation's shares, which is can be worth hundreds of millions. So, whatever.

please tell me how capping the salary of the CEO in a private company--indeed, the CEO might have invested 10's of millions of his own money in the company--helps anyone?

Socialists are like dogs--once they eat food they've killed, they will piss on whatever is left over so other dogs can't have it.

That is, the socialist answer is to dumb-down or bust everyone down to the same level of misery.

Just look how great it worked in Russia.  the only fuckers that were rich in the end were the party.

lol thugs?

20 times seems a littke too restrictive imo, but a scale based on profits, employee pay, and the size of the company would be good.

Greed aside, its a poor business model to flood money to CEOs at absurd rates.

Capping the salary means that the corporation cannot be competitive in terms of recruitment...so the corporation will have to settle for whatever is left over after all of the uncapped private corporations have snatched up all of the quality CEOs...

Sounds like a great plan...more mediocrity in the public sector.  And if they do, by chance, happen to get a quality CEO at a cut-rate price, he'll get stolen by a better offer from a private corp.

just words.

actions prove more effective in making a point; and that is all that's happening here.

i think it's really just a matter of trust. but don't take my words for it. that's just my opinion.

fyi, i just don't see any relevance in politics, period. so don't expect me to sympathize. :okay:

So, if a CEO started a company, Invested say, 20 million dollar to get it going...the most compensation he could make would be 20 times his lowest paid employee...hmmmm.....

Math:  if the lowest paid makes 20k, the CEO makes 400K a year...hmmm...only takes him 50 years to make his money back by those rules.  OK, so he makes it fair and raises the janitors pay to $100,000K...that's better.  Now he can make what, 2 million a year--only takes 10 years to make his money back. The only problem is, the company doesn't last 10 years....it isn't competitive with the overpaid unskilled workers.  So China gets the business.....

It's simple economics.  There is no 'RIGHT' to work for a private company.

By the way, say the company makes a HUGE profit, who gets the extra money?  I would guess there is an easy answer under this socialist system--the government gets it.

FUCK THAT SHIT.  And don't try to tell me government knows better.  Look around the world--they are fucking up everything they touch.  THEY and THIER LAWS, as well as GOVERNMENT REGULATORS NOT DOING THEIR JOB IN THE FIRST place, is the cause of most of the bubbles and scandals that occur.
