Fantasy - Move to Amsterdam, grow shrooms, sell spores

I sometimes get the opportunity to zone out at work and fantasize about things I would love to do...
One of those things would be to pack up all my shit, quit my job, and move over to Amsterdam. I've saved a lot of money and think I could make a go of it. Maybe I could grow mushrooms and work it out with a friend here in the states to distribute my spores. Make some money on the side doing that and then work some little shit job to pay the rent. Maybe even grow a couple of pot plants for fun.
I'd love to follow this dream one day. Just move over there for 5 or 6 years and live a relaxing life. I wonder what kind of job market there is over there? Cost of living? Could I actually do this?
I'm going to the Cannibis Cup next year with my best friend. Guess I'll get a better feel for this fantasy then.

I'm thinking more like shipping the spores to a friend here in the US and have him sell the spores through a web site. A la Hawk's Eye, etc. The fully colonized kits are a neat idea. Those would be the biggest thing since sliced bread if they were legal here. Great novelty! I see someone (MushMush) is selling one that is like that kind of kit. Just click a button and the spores drop into a jar of sterile substrate. Everything grows in vitro. I thought that was a great idea too.

that is my dream too, growing mush, sending the spores state side, selling the fresh mush in my own smart shops, along with a whole bunch of ethnobotanicals, and quality Ganja.

I want to move to amsterdam with my good buddy and grow mushrooms and have a little cafe where people can chill and smoke and trip, that would be nice. Peace.

Nice guide, gives a little flavor for the area.
I am really looking forward to my trip there next year. I'll be doing a lot of research on the Netherlands and be paying special attention to job opportunities there.
The reason I've chosen Amsterdam for my fantasy is that I'm guessing most of the people speak English there, considering all of the American tourists that visit. Would an English speaking person with no experience with the Dutch language be accepted fairly easy as a resident? I wonder what the immagration laws are like there...

Almost all Dutch people can speak English to some extent. It's pretty hard for foreighners to learn our language because all the Dutch keep speaking English to them. Amsterdam is quite nice but really crowded. It will be hard to get a (cheap) room there. Check out some of the other cities in Holland before you decide like Utrecht, Groningen or Den Haag. I don't know about the immagration laws, but I think Americans can move here pretty easily.

Since I have a couple nice folks from the area pitching in, can you tell me...
What's the average per hour wage? Maybe for your job? How much for your average apartment?

cybrbeast - maybe you could design my site for marketing spores after I make the move! I have a bachelor of business administration from UofM and currently work for a non-profit as a program manager. However, I'm pretty open minded when it comes to a job. I'd work in a grocery store, factory, etc. I'm not really interested in making a ton of money, just pay the bills and live happy.

The immigration laws are really strict right now, but they change all the time. Basically, you have to jump through hoop after hoop for the Immigration service, pay them at least 500$ and then wait for them to possibly reject you. Plus...it is not like some other countries in Europe (like France) where if you have enough money to support yourself then you are allowed to stay. In Holland you must have a compelling reason to stay, such as an employer is sponsoring you or you are in a relationship (but you don't have to be married, just "in love"). The easiest way to stay is to set up a legitimate business, but for this you must have a business plan, make a certain amount of money have have something like 8 or 10 thousand bucks. Good luck!

Man, I wish I could get some real information.
Some people tell me moving to Amsterdam is easy as 1-2-3, and some people tell me it's damn near impossible.

i suggest going to maastricht instead. it has all of the perks of amsterdam, except it's not as crowded and cleaner. would probably be expensive to get a smartshop going, but you'd make more money there in the long run.

Yeah for a smartshop Maastricht would be good. Because it's close to other countries. But there probably are a lot of smartshops there already.
Learyfan, maybe you should call your embassy or something for more info on moving to Holland.

There will be a few hurldles, but it can't be that hard for an american to move to amsterdam, as dam is full of americans, some of which own coffee shops and bars, so i would say its very possible.

It is both easy and difficult (sounding like Morpheus) to move to Amsterdam. It depends on the type of life that you wish to have. I went to University in A-dam for some Master's degrees and it was fairly easy to live off my student loans and what not ($8,000 per year from the USgov't). My apartments were always between 300-500 $ a month, for places that ranged from shitty shitty dorms that were filthy and only had 2 toilets for 20 people, to nice, decent, real places that were of course more expensive and often only temporary. However, under my residence conditions I am only allowed to work 10 hours a week, and most of my jobs have been for between euro 6.50 and 9 per hour/ with health insurance (yay!) that is decent, even working so few hours. However, now I am nearly done school and my legal papers have run out, I cannot really work here and it is a lot tougher. There is very little illegal work to be found, it is almost impossible to live without a job, my student loans are up...basically my options to stay here are quite limited. Still, if you want to have the lifestyle of living out of a duffel bag and living in shitty places with dodgy people and not knowing where your next meal/joint is coming from then sure it can be done, especially in the summer. I feel too old for that shit and I actually want to have a real job with security and a house that I know I can stay in, so I am thinking that I'll have to leave in a few months, when I am done my last work on my last Master's thesis. Still, I plan on trying out a few more hairbrained schemes before I get on any planes, and there are other countries to live in besides the US, so who knows. Amsterdam is a beautiful place, even though some people hate it (with good reason), and you can do a lot here that is impossible other places. My advice is to make certain you plan things well and realize what you really want so you aren't disappointed or ending up in a dangerous situation. There really are a lot of hustlers here, especially in the real estate market and especially if you are a foreigner, so always look out for you own interests, trust your instincts and talk a lot to other people in the same boat as you.

Its a nice fantasy, I think its a realistic one too. I've been wondering what life would be like there, like if you can live a real life there or if its just for pot and visiting. I'm going to look into because I dont think the way life in the US is how life should be.

There is plenty of illegal work to be found in Holland if you know where to look. There are even clandestine employment offices where most of the work is illegal. There also are a few squatter movements and anti-squatters. Both provide free or very cheap but sometimes shitty housing.

Most of all to fulfill your dream is to have a lot of m9ney. It is expensive to live in Amsterdam, and even harder to get work.
Owning a shop for an outsider is also very hard. I know three shroom experts in Holland, besides numerous growers who supply the smart shops with their shrooms.
Hans van den Hurk owns five conscious Dreams Smart Shoppes. One is the Kokopeli owned and operaterd by Veronique. IT is part of a colelctive and so she has to get all of her merchandise through hans to sell in her shoppe which is franchised to her. But she is fromthere.
Anyway. Good luck with your dream.
