Warnings and tips!

Things a new guy should be aware of before starting this hobby!:

1- when you spray lysol in your glove box, don't light any flame until the alcohol evaporates.. you will burn yourself badly!

2- Know your pressure cooker.. and how to use it properly!

3- You canot be too clean in this hobby! just more clean.

4- Javex will ruin clothes and make red turn pink.. wear white clothes.

I'd like to add that you should remember that no matter how easy the Tek says something is, realize that you're going to have to adapt to your specific conditions before things will work properly. This board can only point you in a direction, you need to tailor solutions to fit your own needs sometimes.

When you cut hard plastic ie: bins, heat it up with a hair blower to prevent accidental knife cuts!!!

When you are ready to make a casing, crack the lids on your jars before you get going...

this way you don't end up with all the materials ready to go and have to fight with a fucking lid and contam everything!!!!

clean your humidifyer often ie: every week or so, depends on your conditions..

they will clog up and reduce vapour output!!!

general tips for construction of anything:

Use a soldering iron to cut plastic, it smokes and creates a little stench, but it's a lot more accurate than a knife. (if you don't have a jig saw)

Put a small nail in the tubetip in silicone or glue tubes to keep it open.

Lay out your tools and materials BEFORE doing anything.

Read the faqs again and again.  Also, read the grow logs to see different adaptations of the teks.  Write down what u plan to do first, especially if you blaze often :smirk:

buy a box of latex gloves, disposable, cheap, and will save your skin from lysol and prevent many contam problems!!!

Here are the warnings and tips all compiled into one post. This thread is a good idea. Thank you to everyone who just helped life get a little easier.

ALWAYS POKE HOLES BEFORE BOILING. If you boil the jars and poke holes in the lid for the first time, your jar sucks in a nice lungfull of airnasties.

Also make sure to take some steps to stop the freaking jar from falling over durring boiling.

I like that idea about rolling your cakes around in dry vermaculite and spraying with water....thats a good idea im gonna tell my friend... maybe his cakes will start to pin

Always unplug the heater from your incubator before you remove it from water it will short out real fast!!!!!! and may explode!

were there are cows, there is straw.. any farmer will sell you a bale for real cheap and won't ask questions.. they don't care and think nothing of it!

ask for the golden stuff if asked if you want hay or straw! they will know!

look in your grocery store in the jar/lid/ section and find nylon jelly bags, they are great to rinse and drain wbs with. very small holes so the grain does not go thru them and they last forever...

you can fill 6 quart jars with 2 of them.

Cut your filter discs into quarters and glue over 3/8" holes in your plastic lids. Using entire filter discs is expensive and a waste.

96 for $30.

Wear a face mask when working with cultures. Breathing on them contams them easily.

Do not fill your quart jars too full of grain, as shaking them becomes difficult and you will drastically slow down colonization time. They should be NO MORE then 3/4" full AFTER shaking them (when the grain is loosened up.)

You can speed up drying time of mushrooms by slicing open the stalk exposing the fibrous tissue inside.

Follow the instructions. Do not experiment until you have succeeded in growing AT LEAST ONCE. Everybody feels like a mad scientist when beginning to grow mushrooms and feels this burning desire to somehow revolutionize the methods.

Buy a copy of The Mushroom Cultivator by Stamets.

Then read it.

BE PATIENT. Relax, and quit staring at your jars. A watched pot.....

Keep a watchful eye on your pressure cooker as well. Dont just assume its going to plug along at the same pressure even though it seems stable. Check it every few minutes or so. An exploding pressure cooker is not fun.

Utilize the 99 cent store...the often 'hard to find' or 'expensive' items
can be had in places like that.
for example: strainers at walmart are upwards of $10-$20...
99cent store: tape, lysol, h202, rubbing alcohol, candy thermometers, spray bottles, ziplock bags, envelopes, markers, baking tins, buckets, cooking utensils, measuring cups, etc...

Also, Keep in mind that cubensis readily fruit on their own
without the need of more human interaction.
if your cakes are all white, and dont have any contams,
they WILL fruit...just spray/fan as usual and they WILL grow.
patience is key.

Be aware that your trash/trashcan
IS NOT protected by the 'search & seizure' law...
once you throw it away, ANYONE can look through it,

Dont smoke in your area, for 1. its a file hazard and 2. cigarette smoke can harbour astronimical amounts of contams...i think its 3x more per square foot.
(someone look this up for me, i have to get to work)

I don't have a problem with mine, using the supplied snap on lid, rubbermaid container.

Unless your incubator is in a sterile lab then whats the point? There isn't an appreciable difference in contams between blanket and the rooms air. There are still billions of vectors of contamination. An incubator is not the place to worry about contamination, its just a warm box, with *sealed* media containers inside.

i swear i've had an old unwashed ( fairly clean tho ) bed spred over my incubator for quite a few months and have had 0 % contamed jars from this incubator!!!

Here is a picture of the net bags i was talking about earlier.. left over drinking glasses to let them drain properly!!!

Once they stop dripping ( 10 minutes ) i pat the bottom of the bag with paper towels to soak up the soggy bottom, then load these:

I thought of a good tip. Looking at the shroomery, there are ALL the reasons why growing mushrooms is hard. All the posts about stalled cakes/casings, humidity issues, temperature and lighting. All the contamination possibilities, and everything else that can go wrong gets addressed on these forums. But remember, you are dealing with an organism that wants to grow even more than you want it to grow. And as long as you do you best to provide the conditions in which it is capable to grow, grow it will. It may not be the best flush ever, but you will learn. So newbs, do not get discouraged. Do not chuck casings or cakes that look hopeless. Give it time and do not get discouraged. The mushrooms are working with you.

Don't forget to shake the syringe before use.

I had forgotten until half way through the inoculation.  It's seven days later, and it shows (or should I say, doesn't show)

Can anyone recommend what to do with an inactive jar?  Should I wait longer or not? :blush:

Dont start pressure cooking ect if your stoned or intoxicated in any way.
I have created more contaminated cakes this way, not forgetting blowing my P.C up cos i forgot all about it.

I had that "forgot to shake the syringe thing" happen to me while inoculating some Haw.  When the other cakes had finished colonizing and I cased them, I just cracked open the un colonized jars and spread the substrate into a casing for more nutrients.  Turned a 2 cakes casing into a four cake casing.  :smile:  You will know if you have contams in the jar, they will not take two weeks to manifest themselves.  Likely they'll appear within a day or two.

dont open your pc until its cool to the touch...
...i was in a rush 1 time, vented till "0" psi,
cracked it open, the lid blew off...and literally exploded
coco+verm+peat everywhere..not to mention that shit is hot as fuck...
..so much for being in a rush eh?

When you spray Lysol in your glove box, don't light any flame until the alcohol evaporates or else you will burn yourself badly.

You cannot be too clean in this hobby! Only cleaner.

Javex will ruin clothes and make red turn pink. You should wear white clothes.

Remember that no matter how easy the TEK says something is, realize that you're going to have to adapt to your specific conditions before things will work properly. This board can only point you in a direction; you need to tailor solutions to fit your own needs sometimes.

White plastic Mason jar lids CAN be pressure cooked and re-used!

Even if you know what you need, read the FAQ's anyway. You will pick up some handy tips and learn a lot of things that will help along the way!

When you cut hard plastic i.e.: bins, heat it up with a hair blower to prevent accidental knife cuts!

When you are ready to make a casing, crack the lids on your jars before you get going. This way you don't end up with all the materials ready to go and have to fight with a fucking lid and contaminate everything!

If fruiting multiple strains in the same chamber, make out little nametags before hand in order to properly label with minimal mistakes.

If Lysol touches your mushrooms or your casings, you will end up with deformed fruits!

Clean your humidifier often i.e.: every week or so, depends on your conditions. They will clog up and reduce vapor output!

Cover your incubator with a heavy blanket to keep in the heat, this saves on power, and easier to maintain consistent temps.

Use a soldering iron to cut plastic, it smokes and creates a little stench, but it's a lot more accurate than a knife. (if you don't have a jig saw)

Put a small nail in the tip of your tube of silicone or glue tube to keep it open.

Lay out your tools and materials BEFORE doing anything.

Read the grow logs to see different adaptations of the TEK?s. Write down what you plan to do first, especially if you blaze often. It is sometimes vital that you stay 100% focused.

Coco-coir is found at pet-stores as reptile bedding. It looks like compressed brown bricks!

When nothing seems to be moving, don't panic. Just give it some time. If there is not any contamination, then there aren?t any problems.

Respect your parents and/or the people you live with. There should not be any illegal activity if this isn't something that all of you have agreed upon.

Roll your cakes in Dry vermiculite then spray with sterile water to create more pinning points.

Experiment!!!! But within reason!!!

Buy a box of latex gloves, disposable, cheap, and will save your skin from Lysol and prevent many possible contamination problems!

Always poke holes before sterilizing your jars. If you boil the jars and poke holes in the lid for the first time, your jar sucks in a nice lung-full of contamination in the air.

Make a print with the very first mushroom that you get! This way you are self sufficient and no longer have to depend on vendors!

Always unplug the heater from your incubator before you remove it from water it will short out real fast! It may explode!

Were there are cows, there is straw. Any farmer will sell you a bale for real cheap and won't ask questions. If they ask just say you are using it for bedding in your dog?s kennel.

Look in your grocery store in the jar/lid/ section and find nylon jelly bags, they are great to rinse and drain wild bird seed with. Very small holes so the grain does not go thru them and they last forever. You can fill 6 quart jars with 2 of them.

Cut your filter discs into quarters and glue over 3/8" holes in your plastic lids. Using entire filter discs is expensive and a waste.

Wear a face mask when working with cultures. Breathing on them contams them easily.

Do not fill your quart jars too full of grain, as shaking them becomes difficult and you will drastically slow down colonization time. They should be NO MORE then 3/4" full AFTER shaking them (when the grain is loosened up.)

You can speed up drying time of mushrooms by slicing open the stalk exposing the fibrous tissue inside.

Follow the instructions. Do not experiment until you have succeeded in growing at least once. Everybody feels like a mad scientist when beginning to grow mushrooms and feels this burning desire to somehow revolutionize the methods.

Buy a copy of The Mushroom Cultivator by Stamets. Then read it.

Vent your pressure cooker 5 minutes before shutting the valve.

Keep a watchful eye on your pressure cooker as well. Don?t just assume its going to plug along at the same pressure even though it seems stable. Check it every few minutes or so. An exploding pressure cooker is not fun.

Utilize the 99 cent store...the often 'hard to find' or 'expensive' items can be had in places like that.

Also, keep in mind that cubensis will readily fruit without the need of more human interaction. If your cakes are all white, and don?t have any contamination they WILL fruit. Just spray/fan as usual and they WILL grow, patience is key.

Be aware that your trash/trashcan IS NOT protected by the 'search & seizure' law. Once you throw it away, ANYONE can look through it. That includes Law Enforcement Officers, dispose of your trash wisely.

Don?t buy a kit, its a waste of money.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Don?t smoke in your area. For 1. It is a fire hazard and 2. Cigarette smoke can harbor astronomical amounts of contaminations.

Partially remove all tape and fold over for easy removing before putting your gloves on.

Don't forget to shake the syringe before use.

Don?t start pressure cooking if you are tired. Don?t make syringes while you are tired, they are sharp.

Don?t open your pc until its cool to the touch.

Some simple stuff:

All Strains are so much alike that it becomes a personal preference.  There are no wonder strains... yet..

You cannot grow mushrooms and Cannabis in the same container!!  Don't even ask! :smile:

2 hours of light a day is enough.  Low powered 25w floro stick is fine.

keeping a steady 95% RH from the second you start fruiting is important for a quality pin set and not a bunch of boarder breaks.

Vermiculite can be purchased at local Farm and Feed stores in large Cu. Feet bags for under $15.

Syringes can be purchased at Farm and Feed stores.

you can get free Tyvek material from the Post Office. They will even mail it to your door for free.

If moving into the world of Pressure Cookers save yourself a lot of headache and go gasketless.

PC WBS for 90 minutes for less contamination.

Remember to label your misting bottles...it's not fun accidently spraying a casing with the 'strong bleach solution bottle that looks exactly the same as the water bottle'..hrmph.

Don't work when drunk.. making up a batch of PF style jars and forgetting to add the BRF so you end up cooking jars of vermiculite for an hour is timewasting :tongue:

Do not count warm up time when pressure cooking. 15 PSI for 50 minutes to an hour means just that. When the pressure weight bobbles, start your timer.

I have a feeling this may be why some get contaminated jars.

When cold shocking, you don't need to put cakes in the fridge, just freeze icepacks and put them into the terrarium.

If you wash your hands in a different room from your terrarium, open all doors between you and the terrarium before washing to avoid touching door handles, and try to use disposable paper towels to dry them.

Using a waterless hand sanitiser is not an acceptable substitute for washing your hands, as it doesn't remove the layer of grease on your hands that bacteria breed in.

Remember that sterile plastic gloves only remain sterile until you touch something that is not sterile.

When disposing of contaminated substrate, try to flush it down the toilet or securely seal it in a plastic bag; if you just chuck it in the bin, it'll stink to high heaven and may pose a health risk.

I disagree with this one completely. I had my first jars mycellium turning yellow and I thought it was a contam so I got rid of it. Later on I did a little research and found out that it was yellow because the myc was touching water droplets inside the jars and that contams don't grow right from the mycellium.

Here, I'll just modify it.

Do your research heavily before starting. It can save you money and possibly your life (referring to pressure cooker incidents, getting caught because not keeping your mouth shut, etc. etc.)
