some helpful tips for newbies... and not-so-newbies :)
    #1716875 - 07/14/03 11:54 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

If you are new to cultivation here aer some tips that might help you out achiving a high rate of sucess cultivating mushrooms, and a low rate of sucess cultivating contamination   I'd like to say first off that the best way to learn about cultivation is to grow, observe, ask questions, and keep growing! The more you grow, the more you know   Patience is key.  IF your first 10 attempts fuck up, as long as you LEARN something from it, it's a sucess.  Now, onto the tips.

1) Be Clean ? This applies to everything involved in mushroom cultivation.  Spores of foreign bacteria (that is, non P. Cube) reside everywhere.  Bleach and water in a 1:9 mixture is great for wiping down any surface that you may need to work with, including insides of incubators, inoculation hoods, and terrariums.  91% or higher IPA (isopropyl alcohol) available at pharmacies and grocery stores makes a GREAT mist to sterilize a surface that you?ve already thoroughly cleaned with bleach water.  Spraying Lysol all around the room and over the surfaces to be used also is a great idea.  Shower before dealing with any actual live culture or sterile substance (for example, inoculations require a shower, loading jars with substrate don?t).  Analyze every aspect of your procedure and see what you can do to make it cleaner.  Mist the bowl and mixing utensils you use for substrate prep with IPA and towel dry.
2) Mix the substrate properly  - Too much moisture or too little moisture will make it so your precious spores don?t even get going in the jars.  http://www.fungifun.org/pf/pf_en.htm is an EXCELLENT tek for mixing substrate and obtaining the proper moisture consistency.  I recommend following this tek.  Also, stirring the substrate between every fork-load is a good idea.
3) Use an inoculation hood ? Since the step of inoculation involves opening a clear channel directly into your sterile substrate, performing this step in a sterile environment is obviously preferred.  http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=1627128&fpart=&PHPSESSID= works VERY well, and I guarantee it?ll lower your contam rate when used properly
4) Incubate your jars at the proper temperature ? Anything from 80-86 degrees works fine and allows the mycelia to develop at it?s ideal speed.  http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm is a wonderful, cheap incubator. I?d put a thermometer in the middle of the jars and keep that at about 80 degrees, since it?ll be hotter towards the outside
5) Dunking your cakes after they are FULLY COLONIZED is ideal. http://www.nansnook.com/archives/dunktek.htm gives a demonstration and the pic at the bottom DEFINATLY shows that it?s worth the effort.  Personally I?d say the large Ziploc bags work best. Put in five cakes, fill ? with water, squeeze all the air out (so that the cakes will be totally submerged), seal and put in the fridge for about 16 hours.

This should get you to the point of fully colonized jars with a very low rate of contamination.  It?s up to you from here to grow off of cakes or case.  I recommend that newbies grow off of cakes at least once, if not just to see the way the mycelia produces fruits.

I really hope that this helps out, if anyone else out there has tips that I forgot (basically, things you wish you'd been told when YOU started growing) please post them. I'm sure I haven't covered everything

Good air exchange/light. When I began I had a fully colonized brf/verm casing that I no idea what to do with. It sat in an unsuitable chamber, with the lid allways on the casing...waiting for it to pin, with no light at all. Well it began to stink like mold so I threw it out. If only I knew what I was doing.

i have a question . ... or a clarification i guess . .  cold shocking wouldn't be a good idea when spawning correct? this would slow mycelium growth down i would asssume . . and you want those innoculation points to be healthy and ready to grow instantly right?  Not  that "I" care, it's my best friends cousins sister . .. she's all about the fungi.

switch - You are correct. If you are using spawn, you want it to continue to grow vigorously. The only time you want to cold-shock is immediately before you initate fruiting.

Air Exchange is another HUGE factor. I mainly meant to get people to the point where, at least, they have fully colonized jars. I'll probably type up something like this for cakes, and casings, later on.

peace

1.) Use the enter key when you type long walls of text.
2.) Do not recommend incubators.
3.) No, you never cold shock cubes.
4.) Dont post 30% good info with 75% miss information
    ^^see what i did there.
