Blue staining Mycena

The species descriptions for Mycena confuse me.
These were collected from hardwood litter- So I don't think I can call them M. amicta.
The almost black coloration of the pileus makes me stray away from M. cyanorrhiza.
Whilst drying the bruising is becoming more pronounced, especially on the caps- So Im uncertain about M. subcaerulea.

However, The Basal mycelium at the base of the stem is quite fuzzy, and quite blue- Strongly pointing towards M. subcaerulea.

Anyone got an opinion?

I  am sorry for the crap photos. Im very depressed about it... I had a really hard time with the camera today. Is it actually possible to get worse at photography?:facepalm3:

Not sure which one it would be either, I'm a bit confused. I'm sure somebody with more experience will clarify the species.

Oh I had just proposed M. Subcaerulea, I didn't even realize it was your observation. I haven't collected it yet so I don't feel that confident about it.

This might be a dumb question but are bluing mycena psychoactive? Is it 'magical' bluing or just coloration? If so what is the reason for so many different genera producing psychoactive compounds? Convergent evolution? What would psilocybin have to do with being favored in natural selection? Besides human spreading said magical species around?

I'd say Mycena subcaerulea as well.

I would think that they might be active, but I would hate to be the person that finds out one of the species also contains muscarine. I think that the psychoactive properties are it's type of poison, much like other plants/fungi. It just so happens that the "poison" induces the effects we refer to as a "trip". Might not be as a deterrent, but more of a means to give those animals/people with the knowledge opportunities to seek them out again for the effects, thus spreading the spores and species.

I thought I remember reading somewhere  that they were not psychoactive,and as small as they are,it would probably take a pretty massive does if they were:-)

I have read somewhere (here?) that Mycena cyanorrhiza were active but with
certain uncomfortable side effects. A Swiss guy, I think, tried once. He asked
others to stay away.

I'm about to drop some basal myc on a plate. I've never cultivated anything before, and I am sure this experiment will result in complete failure. If anyone has experience cultivating mycenoid mushrooms, feel free to drop me a line.

Try printing in cold temps (like 40°F-50°F). If you try putting some on a plate, do as many plates as you can with as small of a piece as possible. This will help lower the chance of contams. I think you will succeed, it just takes making lots of plates and lots of transfers to clean them up. Wash in sterile, distilled water before putting on plate to help was away contams.

:hehehe: All it takes is one good plate to make some grains. Where you take it from there is up to you. I'm at the point of making 5 gallons at a time with each jar of grains.
