Watch out man, the blue staining doesnt actually means that the mushroom has pilocybin but indicates the presence of psilocin, this is a very good indicator, but watch out some mushrooms such as boletus cyeanescens stain blue and are deadly.

If you find a mushroom fruiting from cow shit that stains blue, it is definitely a psilocybe. Almost everytime a mushroom stains blue it contains psilocin. Boletus don't even have gills, they have a sponge like material under the cap, but they do stain blue and some are poisioniss. Don't eat any mushrooms just because they stain blue unless you are experianced at what your doing. Take the blueing reaction as a strong indicater that the mushroom is hallucinogenic. Check to see if it matches description of habbitat, spore color, season, etc...Then you should be certain of what you have. Good luck pickin'

And NO, in answer to your question, NOT ALL ACTIVE MUSHROOMS STAIN BLUE. P. Semilenceata often do not stain blue and yet they contain some of the highest alkaloid content yet recorder. Also some Stuntzii, Fimentaria, and even a Baeocystis I've seen don't stain noticably blue.

But unless you know for sure what the mushroom is, don't eat it. You should always look for bluing, and if you don't get it, you should take pause.

Rules of thumb-

If you find a mushroom which
A: blues,
B: has a seperable pellicle
and C: has a purple to purple brown spore print- you're looking at a Psilocybe.

If you find a mushroom that
A: blues
B: has a black spore print
and C: is growing out of manure,
You found a Panaeolous

If you want an active mushroom, and are not a learned mycologist, stick to either of these two types of mushrooms- and to these two Identification criteria. No bluing, ehhhh....? better not.

matt, so

Your right Matt, most Libs don't stain. Some do, but not all.Plus Stuntzis don't always stain either, but they have a nice blue ring around the stem.
I have also read about a blue staining Myceana, which needs to be studied further.
